So I see that there was another very sad and tragic incident involving a fraternity at FSU. Young man is dead due to alcohol poisoning.
And yet Thrasher (who was a Greek at FSU) is the one criticized for trying to ruin Greek organizations at FSU? Seems the damage is self inflicted.
When will these students learn?
The student was from a very prominent Tallahassee family.

By the grace of God I survived college and didn't have something horribly tragic happen...the monumentally stupid and dangerous alcohol related things...can't even think about it. So sorry for these kids and their family, friends etc when this happens.

Article says they don't know how he died yet but it wasn't hazing and hadn't determined if it was alcohol.
22 yrs old.

I'm right there with you Doc. The combination of being young (when super-egos are not fully formed) and the push of social pressure (the dreaded "culture" word, i.e., in-group values and norms) can lead to terrible tragedies that families can never fully escape.

The local media indicates cause of death is pending autopsy but I'm going with Goldmom because she is amazing.

Terrible news for his family.

That is not the Sig Ep house as I remember at FSU. Did they build another house since the mid 80's or is this some random picture?

Sad, but he was 22, so I don't think this was any type of pledge drinking/hazing challenge thing. I could be wrong.

I know this is a moot point but just wondering on that- couldn't he have gone to college later than some and jointed a frat at 22; thus he was being hazed in his freshman year... at 22?

Or do frats put a age limit on joining? I guess my question is more around the norms of when greek life can start.

I pledged at 20 and was considered “old” back in the day. I’m sure it happens at that age but it is not very common IMO.
And who is to blame in this situation? The young man was of age and it would appear it want hazing. It’s just absolutely tragic and I would be a massive hypocrite if I didn’t admit I probably had too many close calls at that age.

The young man was a great person. Very good friends with my daughter. He was the kind of gentleman who always walked the girls home to make sure they got home safely. Hd was one of her first friends at FSU. He just turned 22. Send prayers for his family. It was not hazing.

Tally police say it's doubtful hazing was involved. Just a needless tragedy. Alcohol is ruthless and always always smarter than the user.

Absolutely hate this. As the parent of a kid in this same segment, I'll offer this (not that it explains, justifies or improves anything...it doesn't): (a) kids today drink HARD LIQUOR, while "we" primarily did beer...big difference in terms of potency and impact; (b) kids today are also doing OTHER THINGS TOO, be it weed, Ritalin, body-building crap, and/or whatever (sometimes ALL of those things); and (c) social media is a "thing," and being publicly portrayed as a wimp or quitter is something kids in this age group will avoid at all costs.

I don't have the answers. If I did I would donate them to society 100% free of charge. Just sickened that yet another family is devastated by a senseless premature death. Godspeed to this family and everyone else who knew him. Awful.

Deserves its own thread but FB and other social media will go down as one of the worst creations ever.

I worked the the FSU Student Counseling Center for 10 years and I can tell you that the number one "drug" problem at FSU and colleges everywhere is, and always has been, alcohol. It's not just that students drink regularly, it is how they drink. Binge drinking and getting "black out drunk" are quite the norms. When I was an RA in Kellum Hall as an undergrad I always preferred dealing with the weed smokers compared to managing the drunks. Give the pot smokers a bag of Doritos and they are cool. The drunks always were a pain in the ass.

When did you RA at Kellum?

Yeah no A/C in Smith...thought I had hit the big time in Kellum which had A/C.

Kellum '91. Sophomore year. Even then it wasn't cool to be in the dorms second year. A/C was its only saving grace, coming from no-A/C Gilchrist the year before.

I was at FSU then. I’m telling you that the boozing was not as serious as it is now. Fake ID’s weren’t easy to get. And it was socially taboo for girls to get hammered like now. With curfew at the dorms there was no going out at 10 PM like now. Habits and dependence on alcohol developed in College are sadly carrying into adulthood.

All of this is true. Also, I think FSU was "smaller" then, so getting out of line was not as anonymous as it is today with 40,000 kids spread out all over Tallahassee. Further, what we see on our campuses today is just a microcosm of what we see in society as a whole....the world today is (way) more permissive, and "out there," than it was 30-40-50 years ago. Finally, social media and everything else loudly broadcasts -- perhaps even "celebrates" -- some of the extreme stuff that young folks unwittingly regard as normal (or at least OK).

Big mess.

I agree with you. When I was a psychologist at the FSU Student Counseling Center one thing I noticed, and this was confirmed by others at college counseling centers around the country, was the increase in poly substance abuse. Alcohol being mixed with benzos, GHB, etc present different and very dangerous consequences. Back when I was an RA it was mostly weed (much less potent than today's product)and alcohol. Times change...its like a drug store on campus now

Really sad stuff. I didn't know Will but apparently he lived in my neighborhood and there's a candlelight vigil here on Sunday.

Yeah weren’t any guys in my day getting hazed that old.. but enough guys and que the back to the future are you chicken routine and man you would see some insane things that only luck pulled anyone through. Sad story.

My son finished college in 2017 (Ohio) and completely confirms your experience. He was in a frat. I asked him one time, "So about how often would you say someone from your frat or visiting your house party actually got alcohol poisoning?" His answer was, "More or less, weekly. Maybe every couple of weeks. You'd be surprised how often they are girls."

"Getting blacked (out)" is too often celebrated by young/naive kids who believe they are invincible. It is tragic. If I had the answer I would donate it to society free-of-charge.
