The No. 9 Florida State men’s tennis team had its first defeat of the season to No. 6 Arizona 6-1.
The day began with enthralling doubles play as Jamie Connel and Jan Sebesta stormed out to an early lead and quickly won the first doubles match 6-1 on Court 3. The first two courts were each level at 5-5 with the first point of the match in reach.
Erik Schiessl and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif delivered some well-timed shots to put away the match at 7-5 and win the doubles point. Alex Bulte and Youcef Rihane’s match was left unfinished in the tiebreaker at 6-6.
The Seminoles had early first set leads across Courts 2-5 before Arizona was able to outlast and win five first sets in singles play.
Arizona was able to clinch the match after four consecutive singles victories. Rihane forced his Arizona opponent into a third set super tiebreaker on Court 4 before falling 10-8. The Seminoles had two scratches across the lineup after injuries prior to singles play.
Florida State will host No. 15 South Carolina, No. 16 San Diego, and UNC-Wilmington in the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend to qualify for the 2025 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Texas. South Carolina and San Diego will face off on Friday at 2 p.m. before the Seminoles play UNC Wilmington at 5 p.m. The non-advancing teams will play at 2 p.m. on Saturday with Friday’s winning teams playing afterward at 5 p.m.
