Now that Mike Norvell is officially Florida State's new head football coach. Gathered up a few nuggets about who he will be targeting for his coaching staff.

UPDATE 12/13 @ 12:30 p.m.

With all the coordinators squared away it's just a matter of filling out a couple position coaching slots still left.

In case you missed it, Ryan Silverfield is reportedly getting the head coaching job at Memphis.

With that in mind, Norvell still needs to find his OL coach. Of course, TCU's Chris Thomsen is a definite possibility (see details below). Another interesting possibility we are hearing is Randy Clements possibly staying as FSU's OL coach. It's looking more and more like he and Kendal Briles will be split up.

We have learned that Terrell Buckley has already had a discussion with Florida State about coming in to coach defensive backs. He is currently the DB coach at Mississippi State but we hear he really wants to come home and coach in Tallahassee. Of course, this will ultimately be up to Norvell and newly hired DC Adam Fuller.

UPDATE 12/11 @ 7:45 p.m.

This tweet goes along with what we were hearing earlier about Adam Fuller possibly becoming Norvell's DC. Keep in mind he could still come in as a position coach. So we are still waiting on confirmation that he's going to be the DC.

UPDATE 12/11 @ 5:50 p.m.

Another coaching target for Mike Norvell is Tennessee RB coach David Johnson. He coached with Norvell at Memphis in 2016 and 17. Hearing there might be some back and forth between FSU and Tennessee with salary offers.

There is also some noise out there about Notre Dame's OC Chip Long, who will reportedly be stepping down in South Bend. He also worked with Norvell at Memphis in 2016. Nothing solid at this point but there's enough out there making it possible for him to join the staff.

------

UPDATE 12/11 @ 3:30 p.m.

It's been way too quiet on the Dan Lanning front re. becoming the new defensive coordinator. There's been nothing new on the FSU front or from our sources in Athens. But we are hearing it's more of a possibility that Adam Fuller will be named Mike Norvell's DC - this is something we said was a possibility a couple days ago. We've been told that Norvell would like to have his DC on staff in time for the huge recruiting weekend, which starts Friday - which lends more support to Fuller.

I suspect we'll get clarity on this issue in the next 24/48 hours.

---------------

UPDATE: 12/9 @ 6 p.m.

Another possible addition to Norvell's staff is Chris Thomsen, who is currently TCU's offensive line coach. However, if he joins the staff it will likely be at tight end, or even possibly another position. Thompsen coached with Norvell at Arizona State from 2013-15.

Also hearing that Josh Storms could become FSU's new strength coach. He's been with Norvell both at ASU and Memphis.

UPDATE: 12/9 @ 5:30 p.m.

Keep hearing that Ryan Silverfield is very likely to be hired as FSU's new offensive line coach (see first update below). His name is coming up with recruits which makes it sound like it's pretty close to being done.

UPDATE: 12/9 @ 5 p.m.

Florida State issued a press release confirming that Odell Haggins will remain on staff to coach the DL under Mike Norvell.

“I’m extremely excited to announce that Coach Odell Haggins will be my first official assistant coach here at Florida State,” Norvell said. “He is an incredible representative of Florida State football, a tremendous leader and teacher and a wonderful man. His knowledge and understanding of the Nole Way will be critical in our pursuit of excellence for this football team on and off the field.”

Official press release on Odell Haggins

Hearing there's a good chance that current Memphis' defensive coordinator Adam Fuller will join Norvell's staff at Florida State. However, he's probably coming in as a position coach rather than the defensive coordinator. He's coached every position on defense throughout his career so there's no telling where he'll end up if in fact the hire goes through. Of course, if Lanning and others fall through he could fill the DC role as well.

UPDATE: 12/9 @ 10:50 a.m.

We heard yesterday that it's likely that Odell Haggins will remain on staff with Mike Norvell. That was apparently discussed this morning on an ACC show. And that's consistent with the fact that Haggins is one of the few remaining coaches that is still active in recruiting. The others are Telly Lockette and Ron Dugans. That doesn't mean both or either will be retained, but it's definitely a positive sign. It will be most interesting with Dugans considering that Norvell really likes John Simon, Memphis' current receivers coach, passing game and recruiting coordinator. You have to wonder if Dugans is being evaluated to see whether he should be retained - and part of that could be how he does on the recruiting trail.

There are numerous reports that Barry Odom, the former Missouri head coach, is the leading candidate to take over at Memphis, where he was an assistant coach from 2003-11. If that happens, it's greatly increases the chances that Norvell will be able to bring in several of the current staff at Memphis with him. The most important from that group is probably Ryan Silverfield, who has taken over as interim coach at Memphis and was rumored as a candidate to take over as the full-time coach.

UPDATE: 8:40 p.m. ET

Defensive Coordinator - Dan Lanning (33). He's currently UGA's DC and before that was the LBs coach in 2018. He worked for Norvell at Memphis coaching linebackers. He was a GA at Alabama before that working with both Kirby Smart and Nick Saban. At last check Lanning's salary was $750K. I'm sure UGA will try to keep him so it will probably cost FSU well in excess of $1 million to get him to re-join Norvell.

Offensive line coach - Ryan Silverfield (39). Norvell's right-hand man as both the running game coordinator and OL coach. He's also been honored as one of the nation's top recruiters. From 2008-15 he coached with the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions in the NFL. He's from Jacksonville and starting his coaching career at Bolles.

Wide receivers coach - Tee Martin (41). FSU fans know this name very well from his days as a star QB with Tennessee (see 1999 Fiesta Bowl). He's currently coaching WRs at Tennessee. He's been coaching in college for 10+ years.

Offensive Coordinator / QBs coach - Kevin Johns (44) - Prior to joining Memphis in 2019, Johns was the OC at Texas Tech and Western Michigan. Keep in mind that Norvell calls the plays so this situation is similar to Jimbo Fisher so the OC isn't really the full-time OC.

* Keep in mind that this is just who we hear that Norvell will target for his staff. Doesn't mean these guys will be on staff. Like with every coach, deals need to be negotiated and finalized - and in a lot of cases FSU may be in a bidding war with other schools.

As far as the current staff, we hear that Kendall Briles and Randy Clements are likely to join Lane KIffin at Ole Miss.

We've also heard the chatter that Odell Haggins is contemplating retirement. If he doesn't want to remain as an on-field coach (that will be between him and Norvell) there's a good chance he would remain on staff in a support role. A lot of this is still TBA.
