I very much enjoyed everybody's posts about Major League Baseball in the other thread that's active right now. They got me thinking that one of the best things about Major League Baseball and baseball in general, are the movies that have featured it. In my opinion, baseball movies far outpace movies about other sports. Here is my partial list: Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, The Rookie, A League of Their Own, The Sandlot, Bad News Bears, The Natural, For the Love of the Game, Little Big League. I'm sure there are more but I don't want to cheat and start looking them up on the internet. About the only good football movies I can think of are Brian's Song, North Dallas Forty and The Longest Yard. The only good hockey movie I can think of is Slap Shot. As for soccer, Bend It Like Beckham? Victory? No thanks! Basketball I can think of One-on-One, which I actually thought was a pretty good movie. Also Hoosiers, a very good movie. Check the baseball list and it's made the most good movies. What you think!

A couple of sports movies you're forgetting.

Major League 1 and 2, 3 was worthless
Odd that you included Little Big League but not Rookie of the Year. They came out about the same time. Def movies of my youth that I stop down to watch if they're on.

Football movie - Necessary Roughness

Soccer - Goal! Was actually very well done.

Bull Durham and Field of Dreams is a great one-two punch from Costner. Captures the reality of minor league baseball in one and the mythical aspects of baseball in the American conscience in the other. An old one I always enjoyed was the The Stratton Story. Eight Men Out was also a good one.

I love Eight Men Out and Necessary Roughness. Always loved Field of Dreams too, but I think its more nostalgic than anything else. Watched it about a year ago and thought it was pretty bad acting.

My son and I watch Sandlot a couple times a month. Rookie of the Year is in the DVD player in the car. When we go to travel baseball tournaments a couple of his teammates ride with us so they can all watch it. When they are on we will watch Field of Dreams, A League of Their Own, Benchwarmers (I personally hate this one), Million Dollar Arm,

Movies that I don't watch with my son yet but watch when I can; Major League, Bull Durham, For the Love of the Game, 42, and Mr. Baseball

One that most haven't seen is called All-Stars. It is on Showtime on-demand. If you are involved with a Little League, it is a must watch. My favorite quote, "coach, that's a $300 bat, it isn't made for bunting."

How do you make a list of baseball movies and leave out Major League???
Of course I love Major League! Have it on DVD. Remember, I said it was only partial list. Had to leave some for others to post, which you admirably did.

I was thinking of Rookie of the Year, when I posted The Rookie by mistake. "Pitcher's got a big butt!" The Rookie one is a pretty good baseball movie with Dennis Quaid though.

Baseball has more, yes. But you left out several and some have been mentioned, but to add:
Football- Friday Night Lights, The Blind Side, Remember the Titans, Rudy, We Are Marshall, Varsity Blues, and comedies The Little Giants, Waterboy and Draft Day
Basketball- White Men Can't Jump, Glory Road, Space Jam, Blue Chips
Hockey- Miracle and Mystery, Alaska
Soccer- Big Green and Green Street (not that great but fun to look at hooligans)
Also a lot for Golf- Tin Cup, Greatest Game Ever Played (woefully inaccurate but fun for Disney effort), Caddyshack, Happy Gilmore
Added Baseball- loved Angels in the Outfield as a kid, 42 is decent as is Moneyball

I'm in utter disbelief that the greatest baseball movie may not be mentioned (I scanned and didn't see it but maybe it's there)... The Natural!

I'd place The Natural first, followed by Field of Dreams for a very close second.

Don't worry! It made the cut. In the original post. Sometimes when I'm reading quickly I don't see things either. Happens all the time!

You guys are too young. None of you have named Bang The Drum Slowly or The Pride of the Yankees.

Goon is a great hockey movie I forgot. Heard they are making a sequel. Wonder if it will be good?
I agree. I was expecting a crap fest, but decided to give it a watch when if first hit Netflix because Jay Baruchel wrote it. Its a great hockey movie.

If you are talking sports movies comparisons, what about boxing movies! :)

Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and the Rookie, if they are on, I will usually watch. Baseball isn't my favorite sport, but I do like the movies about it.

Since we are all over the place with movies/ sports does anyone have an opinion of Miracle-- the story of the 1980 US Hockey Olympic team?

I liked it; I like Kurt Russel and to this day it maybe USA's biggest upset of a more dominant country in any sport. The interesting thing is , which probably everyone knows by now, the USA Russia game was not for the gold medal.

It would be like having to beat Germany and then Brazil in the soccer World Cup.

Baseball makes some of the best sports movies, by far. Most of the baseball movies I like (and many I don't like) have been mentioned, but unless I missed it, I have a good recommendation...Battered Bastards of Baseball, a documentary on Netflix. Sort of a "stranger than fiction" story...turns out that Kurt Russell's dad owned the last unaffiliated baseball team in the minor league system, and it's a really interesting, entertaining story. It's really, really good, and anyone that likes baseball movies should check it out.

But pound for pound, boxing is the best for sports movies. There have been something like seven boxing movies to get an Oscar nomination for best picture, with at least two wins. I think baseball has had two movies nominated for best picture, with zero wins.

I don't think another good baseballish movie has been mentioned. Trouble with the Curve is an underrated or unknown decent movie.

For another good baseball movie that is sadly underseen, look for Long Gone. If I'm not mistaken, it was an one of the earlier made for HBO movies. I haven't seen it in a million years, but I remember it being really good. It's Bull Durham-esque I would say...although I think it preceeded Bull Durham, but I'm not sure.

Huh, just looked it up, and sounds like this movie is impossible to see, other than buying an old VHS off ebay. Anyone remember Long Gone on HBO back in the day? As I was looking, turns out it's not just me...a lot of people think it's one of the best baseball movies ever. Crazy that in this day and age, it's pretty much out of circulation completely.

i think you see more baseball movies because it's America's Pastime but also because it's easier to replicate the game play (except for pitching).

My choices:
Baseball - Field of Dreams
Football - Rudy
Golf - Tin Cup
Basketball - Hoosiers
