Well maybe not best but pretty darn good..note that the guy on the right switches from trumpet to bass midway...

My favorite collection of covers is the soundtrack from the early 90s movie, "The Commitments." It's truly great stuff.

As for best cover, there are too many to name one - but if I were to try, it would probably be Janis Joplin's version of Me & Bobby McGee

The were good no question. I still like this Ukrainian group better though for several reasons.

One, I like the song better. But along with that the horns had more power and the rhythm section I felt had more energy and preciseness. Certainly the better recording quality helps that. They copied the original pretty darn close. Both groups were good however. It takes a lot of skill and talent to play a tune almost exactly like the original.

This one's pretty good.

Really nice job on that tune. The singer has the chops to do that song. Liked the bassist's left hand technique. Now if I could only get my students to do that. Duo gigs I find are tougher to play. No drums and trying to fill sound while trying to keep out of the way of the guitar esp when he is soloing. At least it was a casual gig and not a tux gig. :D

Joss Stone doing a version of “Some Kind of Wonderful” will set yo soul on fire.

Several others have worked this song including Grand Funk Railroad and Huey Lewis and the News. It was penned by a cat named John Ellison of the Soul Brothers Six in the ‘60s.
I get chills hearing this song cranked up loud.

I'm a big fan of "Walk Away Renee" by the Four Tops. I almost always prefer the "definitive" version of great songs (not necessarily the original). But that is one that I love equally and is in rotation.

Maybe my favorite is Mitch Ryder's "Shake a Tail Feather" which I think was more popular as a James Brown song, and most famous as the Ray Charles bit in The Blues Brothers. To me, Mitch Ryder's version slays all. Greatest white boy soul man of all time, and it's not close.

Not the best covers ever, but not a bad purchase about 25 years ago.

Not a big fan of these kind of cover albums, but I love me some Donovan, and this has some of my favorites (Epistle to Dippy, Barabajagal, Rikki Tikki Tavi).

A little disappointed nobody covered "I Love My Shirt" though, one of the most ridiculous apparently sincere songs I've ever heard. Whenever I hear this, it makes me wonder if Donovan's entire shtick might have been a tremendous troll job, because this is pretty bold. Could have been a Donovan parody if he didn't release it himself.

Me & Bobby McGee has been a song I have thought was great all my life. Somehow, I didn't know until reading this post that the Joplin version was a cover and not the original.

It's like as if I woke up today and someone told me that daylight savings time wasn't the original time. :(

I think the best by a landslide is All Along the Watchtower, Jimmy Hendrix.

That’s definitely one that came to mind, but there are other covers which not only better the original but are amazing, classic songs.

Tainted Love by Soft Cell is an 80s anthem and I even love the Marilyn Manson version, the Soft Cell version is a cover of a subpar original.

Gloria Jones original

And Nothing Compares 2 You is a 90s anthem

But the original is a failed Prince sideproject called The Family

Some great tunes in this thread.

Even though I am not a big fan of Disturbed, the cover of Sound of Silence amazes me.

That’s my favorite recent cover, narrowly edging out two other covers from last year.

Theory of a Deadman’s Version of Wicked Game

With the original being the classic by Chris Isaac (and a great video because of...reasons)

And I also love the recent New Year’s Day cover of Gangsta

And the original by Kehlani

While listening to Tribe's recs, I found this interesting re-make. If you are fan of Blondie......

Grew up in J'ville, there was no one like Skynyrd.............but this is a pretty good cover....

Thanks Tribe....I'll be chasing music the rest of the day...I had work to do.

Hall and Oates version of Family man.

Here's the original Mike Oldfield version, which was pretty cool too.

I like both versions of Our Lips are sealed, the original Go-Gos and the later Fun Boy Three version.

Not sure if Fun Boy Three's was technically a cover, since the singer wrote the song with Jane Weidlin of the Go-Gos when they were dating. Go-Go's recorded and released it two years earlier though.
