Best used truck under 30k

What engine? Assuming a clean car-fax, seems like a great price for a low mileage '13

Ford has a fire sale on leftover 2014 F150's right now. You can pickup a brand new one for right around 30 grand if you go with the 6 cyl 300HP model.

Another great option is Offleaseonly.com I bought a Navigator there and the price was 10 grand lower than Tallahassee.

We have a new ecoboost F150 as a work truck and it's a great truck. plenty of power and good mileage. It shouldn't be compared to the Chevy 5.3. No comparison in the power the ecoboost gives. Many think they are just economy engines... they are not.

Chevy 5.3 should be compared to the Ford 5.0. Ecoboost compares with the 6.2 Chevy.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I'm looking to buy from a dealer though because I would rather trade in my car than try to sell it. I'm strictly looking at 4x2 and that has hurt my selection a bit, it almost seems easier to find 4x4 with the other options I want...

Uh no, you can feel free to compare the Ford 6.2 (the one they put in the Raptor) vs the Chevy 6.2 though. The ecoboost is just a third option directly comparable to the Ford 5.0 and Chevy 5.3. Oh by the way it's the best option of the three in every possible way. More power, more towing, better torque curve, better MPG. Not sure how you can try to argue those facts... It's pretty indisputable unless you're just a Chevy homer. I've test driven both recently and it's not close at all.

Yea I've been seeing the new inventory blowouts, but to get the options I really want (FX2 SuperCrew Ecoboost) I'd still be right around 40k.

Because the "facts" are not all true. My next door neighbor has an ecoboost 6. I have the 5.3 Chevy. I get better mileage than he does. I would also question the payload.
In all honesty, I have too driven both. As has every auto magazine in the country. The truth is, unless you are a ford homer, the results are all extremely close. 0-60 times are fractions of a second. As is top speed and 70-0 braking. Both great trucks. No need to bash one over the other.

I'm not bashing either. Out of the criteria I listed I would say the MPG is the closest among the 3 with a 1mpg difference either way, your neighbor is probably just a little more lead footed than you, and after driving an Ecoboost I can see why because it easily wins the performance categories and is a much faster truck. The silverado I drove felt like a tank (to be fair I can see why some people would like that) but the Ecoboost is damn quick.

Sorry- was looking at rolling start. Here is a great comparison of the three major brands...

So the ecoboost is a half second faster to 60 and a half second faster in the 1/4 mile. I'd consider that pretty significant and again it was very obvious to me when test driving both of them.

If that's important to you, you can't go wrong with the Ford. Personally I fell in love with the look of the new Silverado. I never drove anything else. Just went out and bought the one I wanted. I have been trying all day to get it to spin out in the snow and I can't! And that's in 2wd with traction control. It's a beast in 4L!!

Only one complaint I hear about Sierras or Silverados. If you're going to tow, get a 2500, the transmissions in the 1500s are crap if you're going to pull anything bigger than a john boat or 4 wheeler.

Ive only driven a GM truck all my life and never really done any heavy towing but Sierra 1500 Z71 5.3 crew cab or extended cab gets my vote!

My dad drives a Tundra now and its grown on me, its a beast!

They are putting a new 8 speed in some of the 2015's. I don't tow much with mine so I can't say if the above is accurate or not

If the japs could figure out how to get some fuel economy out of that huge 5.7, Tundra would be my first choice. It's just not even competitive in the MPG department, and since I commute to work I had to rule it out.

The Tundra's interior alone is a deal breaker.

What's so bad about it? Maybe the low end models are very basic, but the higher end ones look comparable to the higher end F-150s and Silverados.

That lift 1500 with the 5.3L i posted earlier in the thread snatches my 31 travel trailer around like it isn't behind it, that is with the 35s it is rolling on. Now the 6-8mpg when towing is the only reason I am thinking about getting rid of it. In which case I will either be going with the 6.7L Ford F250 or the 6.7L Dodge Cummins 2500. Leaning toward the dodge right now.

I am getting 15 mpg on average on the highway with that setup with the 5.3L, the ford eco boost with standard tires is only getting a couple mpg better than that.

Not sure what he means, or even what engine he has in the truck. But my 5.3L will smoke my 35s.

I find peoples posts very very interesting some times.

Maybe the 85 inches of snow we got last year??? It's not uncommon to get 8+ on a regular basis here

What? Unless you live on the side of the mountain I can't imagine ever using 4L for 8 inches of snow. If you are going over 10mph, you are probably putting yourself in danger by using 4L.

So I've now super narrowed down my search to a 2013-2014 F-150 FX2, black, dark red or charcoal, Crew Cab, V8 or Ecoboost. This is actually a surprisingly rare truck for some reason (probably because there aren't a lot of used ones out there yet) but I'll definitely jump on the first one that comes available at fair market value (about 29k depending on mileage and a few options).

So after about a month on the hunt I just bought a 2013 FX2 v8, fully loaded, factory 20" wheels, charcoal gray exterior and black leather interior. It was listed at 31k and after trade and everything I ended up financing 20k so it's not going to break the bank. After being in the market for a while I definitely think I got the best deal on the particular truck I wanted. I ended up being happy with the 5.0 V8 because I was a bit worried about the reliability of the ecoboost long term and also the v8 sounds great, even without exhaust.

Sounds nice. In looking for a 2010-2012 GM pickup, I'm having a hard time finding one that is not black or white. I'd like a charcoal, gunmetal blue, or that dark metallic red with a light colored interior. Hard to find.

It was listed at 31k and after trade and everything I ended up financing 20k so it's not going to break the bank. In my area, GM 1500s in general are very rare. Chevy 1500 seems to dominate that niche 10-1. I wouldn't get a white truck because it looks like a work truck. I also really wanted dark red, which is pretty common around here. I do like the charcoal though and I'm going to go with black accents so I'm really happy with it... I'll probably get the factory 20s powder coated black and put a custom black mesh grill on it.

If it was listed at $31k, how much did you pay including finance on just the vehicle (not including taxes/fees)?

It was already listed very low, comparables in a 500 mile radius were like 34k average, so they genuinely didn't have much room, which I believe 100% after looking at a bunch of similar trucks. That said, they took $500 off the top, then basically over-allowed on my trade by 2k. So if it was a cash deal I would've been getting it for like 28.5k. Then of course you gotta add in tax, tag title and dealer fee which in this case ended up being about 2500. (I think the dealer fee was 800 or so)

Just Plasti-Dip spray them. It's cheap, easy, durable, and when you get tired of it or want to sell the truck, you just peel it off.

Seriously.

Ha Ha Dealer Fee.

Dealer Fees: Some dealers write other fees into the
contract and give them official-sounding names: "S&H" or "Dealer
Prep" or even "Shipping." Find out early what fees you will be charged
and negotiate accordingly. Before you sign the contract, ensure that no
additional dealer fees have been added.

I find someone paying a dealer fee on a used car even more funny.

With that said:

I am glad you got the truck you wanted and hope you enjoy it for many years.

Jeep why not consider the duramax if going to the diesel?

I got a GMC 1500 bought it brand new in 06 now has 310000 on it. Never had a problem. Only replaced brakes and few front end parts. The 5.3 is the best motor in the business IMO. Classic motor that chevy has dialed in. I feel ford has had to tweak things to keep up. My dad has one for work and he feels it's gutless.

I went truck shopping his weekend actually I'm going to trade up and get diesel. They are expense but I am planning to buy a tractor so I need it to haul.
