Well, in actual China. LiAngelo Ball & two other UCLA freshmen in trouble & suspected of shoplifting while they are in Shanghai for the upcoming college hoops season opener.

Some indications that they could face 3 years or more in jail. Ouch.

Did these youths ever hear of Otto Warmbier and what happened to him in communist North Korea?

What is a ute?

Man, I was really hoping this was about good old Jack Burton. But the story is hysterical none the less. If he used force or coercion it is minimum 10 years up to death. Dude was a year away from a million dollar contract.

Lavar is on the scene. He said it's no big deal.

I have a craving for popcorn all of a sudden.

This should get interesting and I have a feeling this will not end well for these players. One thing Americans don't seem to have much knowledge on is how other countries legal systems and customs work. China could care less about who they or their parents are. Generally speaking foreign countries tend to be more harsh on foreigners, especially Americans. In part to show their people and the mean ole US that you will not break our rules. If Lavar does get involved in this it will only make matters much worse. Not only are foreign countries much harsher on Americans they really have no patience for loud mouth fools. If Lavar is smart he will keep his mouth shut and quietly hope the issue can be worked out without a long jail sentence.

They are ambassadors for our country while abroad. I'm embarrassed and ashamed that Americans, any Americans, would act like that. Makes our whole country look bad. I take no joy in seeing young men have their lives ruined...really I don't. But why should China go easy on them?

This is going to be a costly mistake for LiAngelo and his teammates, not just in terms of NBA dollars but years of life. They should have known better.

Part of me also wonders if this is how WW3 starts.

It sounds like these guys showed off their personal American college basketball player values to China and China didn't like them.

These guys are an embarrassment to the USA.

Why steal stuff when you can just ask adidas or nike to buy it for you?!?

Edit: Looks like they're out on bail, wonder if they can leave the country?

He did it on purpose so they would throw him in jail. This way he won't be exposed as the brother with no skills and we won't have to hear daddy come up with excuses for him.

Some kind of house arrest at the hotel they are staying at from what I understand.

Not per se related to this specific incident, just a general observation of Americans abroad: The more I travel internationally, the more embarrassed I am by my countrymen and women. We usually travel way off the beaten path but when we do have to venture to an area with tourists, esp. American tourists, it's not a pretty picture.

I really hope SNL writes a skit on this with Lavar Ball arguing in a Chinese court. They could throw in Charles Barkley and Donald Trump arguing that the rules don't apply to American athletes. They could bring Yao Ming as the closer. :Face with Tears of Joy

In what way? Every country has them.
