I have a Dell 1545 laptop (nothing great, but serviceable)... it came with only 2gb RAM stock. I want to upgrade that to 4GB... can I just purchase an additional 2gb card and install it in the 2nd card slot (it would obviously be a different brand/manufacturer than the stock)... or do both cards need to be identical in brand - do I need to buy 2 of 2gb cards from the same manufacturer? Thanks in advance!

Sorry you have a Dell, I'm not a fan. I'm guessing you have already checked that a secon slot is open and they didn't fill both. 2 one gig chips are cheaper than 1 two gig.

Just take it to the store and show them and they will tell you. Chances are you can just add another, but there are different types of memory chips and you need the correct one.

More than likely you will need to buy to sticks. Go to crucial.com and put I the details of your laptop. They will give you options. Most of the time this is an easy do-it-yourself upgrade. Lots of instructional videos online.

Thanks! They did screw me with only one slot used with a 2gb chip in there... so I purchased another 2gb chip and will install that into the available slot when it arrives. It looks super simple. I watched a couple youtube videos on it and then opened it up to look around, looks like a really easy job.

I may try to venture into replacing the processor also, although, from what I've read that seems way more difficult.

I wouldnt ever upgrade a processor on a laptop. Usually if a laptop has a fast processor it also has faster/better memory, better chip sets... all to help justify the better installed processor. In my opinion, the cost will rarely be worth the benefit.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to stick to just upgrading the memory and see if that alone makes a difference.
