Rumors that the 64 counties that are at 25% occupancy for restaurants will be bumped up to 50% today, and the gyms will be opened. Haven't heard about the bars yet. DeSantis's comments yesterday that the NFL can play on college fields in Florida is a clear indication of how he views the playing of sports. We are still waiting for an announcement regarding students on campus for all the state universities. Not sure if that will come today, but it would be odd to allow the NFL to play on a college campus but not the college team itself. We shall see.

If FSU campus has limited students on campus and limited FTF classes not sure they can play football in the fall.

The nature of pandemics are you can pay now or pay later but the number of infected will be the same. The middle ground is reopening in phases which is pretty much what most states are doing. It’s really the only manageable thing you can do since we have to come through it eventually. A vaccine may never get developed.

I kinda wish he’d somewhat pump the breaks on these phases just because I don’t want to go backwards. I’d rather see one more week of this first phase regarding restaurants.

He can afford to be aggressive. Florida's hospitals aren't remotely close to capacity, they have plenty of coverage if infections spike. This was never about keeping everyone from getting sick.

Agree. I think they are opening up too soon.

But that is the issue. Nobody knows for certain. Any move will be second-guessed, but move forward we must. Staying locked down in perpetuity is not the answer.

That said, it makes sense for people to take reasonable precautions as we open up this economy. Each state is its own experiment, and Florida’s numbers compared to others are better. That is evidence that we are doing things pretty well.

There will likely be new infections. Unfortunately there will be those that use new infections to support their agenda. But having zero new infections is impossible. You can’t hide from a virus. All you can do is take reasonable steps to reopen the state while using reasonable precautions.

You never know what’s going on globally with a situation like this. Some will walk behind the sheep in front of them right off a cliff and some will raise an eyebrow with business as usual. Nobody has a panacea.

I just wish DeSantis would stop being wimp and speed the opening up

I understand that. My question is what’s the point of even doing phases if you’re going to rush thru them?

Hmmmm...why do you think hospitals aren't at capacity....lets see in a couple weeks

He was attacked by CNN (and Orlando Sentinel) pretty heavily. He is bringing all the local Dem leaders to the table to agree with these decisions. And some Dem leaders want it opened up - but they don't want to be on the front lines doing it. All local Dem leaders are panicked about the grade schools and high schools not opening in August - there really are no plans they can implement for 100% distance learning for students at that age group.

meanwhile in california, they are going to turn off power and water to businesses not abiding to the lockdown. CA is at 0.007% deathrate per population

newsome said they can't repoen until no deaths for two weeks. looks like theyll be closed forever
Where are you seeing this? I see a lot of CA opening similar to FL.

You dead? You posted from the grave?

There are 8 Billion people in the world.......there will be 10 Billion before you know it....even with this virus.

Life goes on.....but some folks love to predict the end of the world. It is hilarious.
I'm glad you find this amusing. You can't say "life goes on" when, for some, it won't. Well I guess you can, because you did, but its a cavalier attitude toward a virus that has killed tens of thousands and will as we all know kill tens of thousands more, the amount of which will change based upon how open we decide to become.

oh so dramatic.

480K die every year from smoking...yet it's legal.
60K die every year on highways yet you can drive
50K die every year from the flu

People die....you don't have to demand people are locked in a prison in order to virtue signal you care.

I'm over those weak narratives. Life goes on.

Two cases documented in the state of Washington in December. 3 1/2 months before Fauci-induced panic.

Fair question, I'm not a virologist so I don't know if it matters. I just adhere to the concept that if the curve is flat enough that you aren't overwhelmed, you shouldn't tank your economy.

Lol are you rooting for that? Sounding pretty weird.

And... They're not at capacity? That's easily verifiable. That's why I think that.

Any word on condo rentals opening. I made my reservation back in January at Fernandina Beach and they won't let me pay the rest of it until he lifts the ban. My vacation is the last week of June and I'm going to be heartbroken if we can't go. I don't understand motels and hotels being open, but not condos.

In my frustration a few days ago, I was going to start a thread titled "Everyone is going to die". But I thought I would be banned. You had a more tempered approach. But still spot on.

Not only do thousands die from the flu every year, a higher percentage of children get sick with it than CORVID 19 (yes I am aware that there is new data showing illnesses in infected children, but it is rare). Yet, we don't require teachers or day care employees to get a flu shot.

We no doubt have to make procedural changes for safety purposes, but "leaders" still make decisions based on the perceived utility of the activity (we don't no stinking bowling alleys!). Just yesterday, The NY Times gave a pretty good factual update with the university situation and students not on campus in California. And it ended with - but we don't need sports played because sports is not essential to what a college does.

Yes, we have always known that. But we can do it safely. Isn't that relying on science?

All I know is, I live in Hillsborough county with a population of 1.5 million people. There are 49 total deaths since this started. Time to get back to some normalcy.

You can voluntarily stay in your own home forever if you wish to. Nothing says you have to go out to eat once we’re allowed to again. But for the vast majority of the population, I think many people are over it.

When I think about a cavalier approach, its been the early management and handling of our most vulnerable (nursing homes) by several outspoken lock down happy Governors. They blew it big time and those tens of thousands you refer to are laying at their doorstep.

Just to clarify .... 250k-650k die from the flu globally (with a vaccine).

I made a post on social media that got crushed but it’s still true. Mosquitos kills almost 1 million people annually (largely in Africa) but still they are responsible for so many illnesses and deaths yet it is what it is.

People just need to be smart. Wear a mask in the stores and wash your hands. Be mindful of the people at highest risks

Agreed.

My flu numbers were approx US numbers. But thanks for more detail.

I’m thinking out loud more than anything here but why exactly do we need FTF classes to play sports?

If the student athletes voluntarily show up to the facilities & participate - why can’t they go home & take their online class?

Test everyone connected to each team on a regular basis, hire more cleaning/janitorial staff & use best practices. Seems pretty reasonable to expect sports in 90 days if we play it smart (like we have been). . Especially if we take away the fans & masses from these venues.

For myself, I am 71 and I'm staying inside until I fell it's safe to go back out. I will say that I think there is more to this shut down that meets the eye. As northvanole said there are many more people from other causes and the government never shut down the economy. So why now?

Its simply really. Hospital capacity, medical personnel, and PPE.

Just look to New York, Italy, Mexico City...

With out the extraordinary measures taken the virus spreads at a rapid rate and the system is overwhelmed. As long as we can handle the number of individuals getting severely sick we can continue to open up. If we get over run again we will have to take more measures.

This is why we are going slow. Remember it takes 10-14 days before you know what your impacts are to your decisions. And you can help to open things up by still respecting this crisis and even though you can move about more freely you might consider if its necessary. You might just save your opportunity.

We need to strike a good balance and manage our medical capacity.

Gyms open Monday. So if schools aren’t open at least the players can now work out at a gym. Good news.

Yep, we could lower the speed limit to 25 mph on highways and those deaths would drop dramatically, and yet we don't. Why? Because there is risk in everything we do in life and we have to strike a balance. Shutting down the economy for months when the hospitals are largely empty is not a balance. And btw, to the extent that people are willing to look outside our country, 9 million people die per year (globally) due to starvation. The projected figure for this year due to ancillary impacts of the worldwide shutdown are over 200 million, yikes!

Who says the hospitals are largely empty? Where? I'm sure in certain states the hospitals aren't struggling but many hospitals around the country have gone through pure hell.

Huh? Nursing homes and the people running them were responsible for coming up with plans for protecting the residents there not governors. This sounds like a lame attempt to point the finger at democratic governors. Their decisions to lock down the states are not to blame for thousands of death. That's crazy to even say.

"Pure hell"? New York is the only city that was close to capacity so they sent up the Comfort (Navy medical ship), which was basically not needed at the end of the day. Everywhere else, hospitals have been way below capacity since elective surgeries have not been taking place. Many hospitals have been furloughing nurses due to the lack of work.

Oh yeah I knew what you were saying just wanted to put the global number out there for people that were not aware. People also know eating fast food is terrible for them but we still lose thousands of people a day to heart disease and obesity
