Angels land Simmons in deal with Braves

By Alden Gonzalez / MLB.com | @Alden_Gonzalez | 6:37 PM ET

ANAHEIM -- The Angels acquired Andrelton Simmons, arguably the game's best defensive shortstop, from the Braves on Thursday, industry sources told MLB.com.

In exchange, the Braves are expected to receive veteran shortstop Erick Aybar along with the Angels' top two prospects, lefty Sean Newcomb and righty Chris Ellis, sources said. The Angels are also expected to send $3 million to the Braves, according to the New York Post. Neither club has confirmed the deal.

The Angels were seeking a long-term answer at shortstop. Aybar is a free agent at the end of the 2016 season and 21-year-old Roberto Baldoquin, given an $8 million signing bonus last December, is seemingly a long way from being Major League ready.

Simmons, 26, is controllable for five more seasons.

Simmons, who was named the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday, has batted a subpar .252/.301/.357 since the start of the 2013 season. During that time, though, he also has a Major League-best 94 Defensive Runs Saved.

Unless they spend some major cash in 2016 off season for 2017 I feel like we may be in competition for last place in the east for quite a while. Who cares if you have great pitching - this current lineup will get no hit a few times this season.

Newcomb has true ace potential and is instantly the #1 in the farm system. I don't think the return is that bad, but the move isn't necessary. Why trade the best defensive player in baseball and possibly the best defensive SS of all time, who is controllable for 5 more years at a good rate, unless you are truly overwhelmed by a lopsided deal, and one that preferably includes someone who can hit?

And this is another move for the future (at least 2017, maybe further) when some moves are for the now, like Olivera who is 30! Which, that deal doesn't look any better now that he has moved to LF and has even less value. More holes created by the front office. It just doesn't add up, and I hope fans don't show up next year, I know I'm not going. There is no reason to go watch this team play. And yes, this is coming with too much emotion because Simmons was my favorite Brave.

Moving Simmons makes some sense but the FO in this organization is terrible. First they knew there was no way they could scrap everything they did last year and turn it around by 2017 unless they are just that incompetent. The return is ok in this deal but it's also November. Might as well move Freddie and Tehran and get it over with.

But when they keep making moves the way they are, the ones they made last year make no sense. Why trade Heyward for Miller last year? I doubt Miller is going to want to stick around in this mess and resign unless he's a glutton for punishment getting no run support and now taking away his best defensive asset in the field. Should've just traded Heyward for prospects including a bat. Why sign Markakis and why trade for Olivera? These guys will not be impact players in 2020 which is a reasonable timetable for rebuilding the organization.

As far as I'm concerned there's no difference between winning 70 or 50 games. If you're going to blow it up, do it right.

Now ESPN is reporting that Shelby Miller is on the trade block. Figure they'll get two journeyman relievers with past Tommy John issues and a bag of balls.

I was pissed when the Cardinals traded Garry Templeton for Ozzie Smith, but Smith's glove won them a lot of games.

The Sox got slammed for giving up 2 of their top 5 prospects, but in reality, their top 8 prospects are already playing for Boston. I like the idea of Atlanta getting the Angels top 2 prospects, but I would feel better as a Braves fan if those top 2 prospects were already at the Major League level. And to boot, I bet Heyward ends up with the Angels.

Huge advantage for the Angels with this trade, for now.

The Red Sox are interested in Miller, even after signing Price.

Incredible return on Miller. Encairte is a solid outfielder and can play now. Blair is a top 60 prospect and replaces Miller's slot in a year. Swanson is a stud and top 10 prospect, plus is from Cobb County and starting at 2nd or SS when the new stadium opens in 2017 will be great for marketing. Love this trade. Thanks Arizona for another great trade!
