Had a chance to try the new SmashBurger last night. BBQ Bacon Chedder with Smash Fries and an Oreo Shake. Don't really have a complaint about the burger or anything about my meal as it was all pretty good. I think the burger by itself was around $7 (the big one). Concept and menu is pretty good and I have no reason not to go back. My son and I went and it was $28 for both of us sharing a large order of fries. Curious to see what the chicken sandwiches taste like as well.

With that said though, I still think 5 Guys has a better tasting burger that is juicier. I just feel I can taste more flavor in it. I haven't been to Byrds or Vertigo yet so here is my top 5 for Tallahassee:

5 Guys
SmashBurger
Chilis
Ruby Tuesdays
BurgerFi

Tried our Smashburger down here in Orlando not too long ago and it was good. I agree with you on the flavor though in comparison to 5 Guys. I really enjoy BurgerFi's burger too... I'd put those 3 as my top 3 as of now, not having tried an In N Out burger thus far.

Been twice now. The "Panhandle" is the local signature burger it's really good with a great flavor mix. The sweet potato smash fries are really good too.

I tried the Smash Burger today and had basically the same thing as you, Cob, except I went with the chocolate shake. I wasn't too impressed. Shake was brought out almost immediately so by the time the burger arrived the shake was melting and runny. Those extra thin Stake & Shake fries that get cold from the time they travel from the kitchen to the table are worthless. While I like the crispy onions on the burger, like you said there was nothing special about the flavor of the beef itself, and a BBC bacon cheddar burger should probably have more than 3 small dollops of bbq sauce on it. I'm in no hurry to go back.

When I'd crave a juicy burger, I would go with Monk's or Bird's. Haven't been to Bird's in a couple years, though, so it may not be the same anymore.

I don't eat burgers nearly as much these days, so Monk's may be a once or twice a year type deal.

I did try Burgerfi last summer and thought the burgers, fries and onion rings were great. Pretty good for a chain.

Because I've never been there. I've been to Midtown Caboose and wasn't impressed at all.

I want to try Monk's. But for me, Vertigo has been consistently excellent from the burger, to the fries, to the onion rings. Uniquely good.

$28 for a burger and shared fries for my son and I would be plenty of reason not to return.

I'm a big fan of fast casual places but I can't see how these places will survive long term.

It is off of the Parkway on Lafayette. The first light at the mall on the right, kind of behind the Rally's. Same guy who owns Cypress owns Vertigo.

Also, the old Macaroni Grill (on the north side) is being converted to a Red Robin... at least I believe so as they had spray painted "Red Robin" on some the plywood boards they had nailed up during the renovation (since painted over). I pass by it each day heading to work.

I really want to put Birds in my top 5 but can't. Been there three times and the oysters were great each time and the chicken sandwich was great, but both times I got a burger it was more like meat loaf than a burger, flavor was ok and apparently "medium" means no pink.

Have not had Smashburger yet but I'll try it in the next month or so.

My wife and I tried the Burger Fi here in JAX not too long ago and we both thought it was pretty good. Maybe it was the particular location but we didn't care for the Smashburger in Neptune Beach.

Trust me $28 was painful. I think each shake was 4.79. Fries were close to $4 as well.

Here's what we ordered:

BBQ Chedder - 7.69
Bacon Cheeseburger - 7.69
Smashfries - 3.29
Oreo shake - 4.59
Oreo shake - 4.59

Total before tax - 27.85

JJ's was underratted. Great burgers, Subs and wings. Ate there many a time back in the early 90's.

Lots of people like to bash In-n-Out after trying it once while on a bender in Vegas. "Over rated, Larry's Gold-plated burger in Pismo is MUCH better!"
But I can get a Double-double, fries, and a drink for $7.25 and be out the drive-thru in under 5 minutes during lunch rush. Staff is always clean and friendly, and the girls are usually cute.

I've been to Vegas twice in the last six months and didn't get to go. I'm going in June and plan to try it this time.

Did you really order two five-dollar milk shakes? Milk, oreos, and cream? That's five dollars a piece? They didn't put bourbon in them or anything?

There are to many of these damn places in Tallahassee. It costs around 5 dollars for a lb of grass-fed beef, so 5 dollars you have enough meat to make 2 pretty decent sized burgers. Pick up a few beers for another 5 bucks or so. Buns for a few dollars, and you have enough for a whole meal.

These places are way too expensive for what you get.

Agreed! This location is THE WORST Smashburger location. I'm sure they have to follow the all the mothership protocols however the burgers just seem so average there compared to every other Smashburger that I've been to.

We've never been back. I would rather go to M-Shack or Colonel Mustard's on Baymeadows.

Just in case your curious. And I promise I'm not judging. I ate like a boss over the weekend, I have nothing to be saying when it comes to how I eat. But I was curious, so I looked it up. I was more shocked by the sodium levels than anything else.

Your poor kids sitting outside with their house burgers

And the other kids got McDonald's.
They outside going,

"We got McDonald's hamburgers.

"McDonald's. McDonald's.

"I got McDonald's."

And you standing there

with this big "house burger".

And kids are honest:

They say, "Where you get that

big, welfare, green-pepper burger?"

And you cry:
"My mother made it."

I'm learning more and more about sodium. We took a week long cruise for Spring Break and the last day my ankles blew up all the way up to my knees. Doctor said it was because all the sodium used in the ship's food. Never had that problem before but eating 3+ meals a day outside of the house will do that. The number above is a big reason why so many people have problems eating out as frequently as they do. I'd hate to see those numbers from our meal at Chili's on Sunday.
