Two major new developments tonight that will most likely push this long festering issue over the edge...
  • Nike has removed all Redskins items from its website.
  • FedEx has formally asked the Washington Redskins to change their team name. FedEx holds the naming rights to the Redskins' home stadium, and FedEx President and CEO Frederick Smith owns a minority stake in the Redskins.

I was having lunch with a friend that saw nothing wrong with the Redskins name a couple of weeks ago. I said it's a racist term and he says it's not. I said, you could absolutely be speaking with a Seminole, and he could proudly say he's a Seminole and not be offended if I said he's a Seminole. I then asked my friend if he could ever go up to a Native American and say to him he's a Redskin... He was speechless trying to respond. Finally, he said, no, he could never and yeah, it's racist.

I've always kinda taken an curious interest in ethnic slurs ever since I saw Full Metal Jacket when Sgt. Hartman lists off a bunch and then tells the recruits he doesn't care which they are because on Paris Island they're all equally worthless.

That said I've never heard the term 'redskin' used as a pejorative, hell I've never heard it in any context not related to the NFL.

There was a survey done of Native Americans a few years back to see how they felt about the name and the majority of them were in favor. If that has changed, they should change the name. If not, they should keep the name. Should not be decided by non-Native Americans telling others what they should or shouldn't be offended by.

Last night Trey Gowdy was being interviewed and was asked about the move by some idiot to change the name of Columbus, OH.
He said yes, they should change it........to Lost to Clemson. :Face with Tears of Joy
