Time to finally come clean! 1980, me and a few Salley Hall buddy’s would wait by the kitchen door at the Brown Derby and clean out the Happy Hour food as they brought it out the door. You got angry and wanted to fight. I was full and decided my next stop was the Phyrst and then Fred’s! I spray painted “#1, Dig it”That night somewhere , just can’t remember where?

You just brought back all my memories, only if I could remember.

I was poor in college. One drink got me access to all the roast beef I could eat at the Derby on whatever day they brought it out. :Face with Tears of Joy .

Derby, Sony's all you can eat chicken, Nickel beer night ect ect. Amazing how far you could get on so little funds back then.

What years was the Brown Derby open? From what I understand it was in the Tallahassee Mall parking lot. What kind of restaurant was it comparable to?

It was in the TM lot near the former Montgomery Wards. Long gone. Good prime rib and the best salad bar in Tally when they were a new "thing". The bar was on one side f the lobby and the restaurant on the other. I can't think of anything comparable, though.

I don’t think I ever went there...and I’m an oldie?

I still miss the Brown Derby. It went out when the mall expanded.

So, you’re telling us you were a recluse? A dork? Church deacon? 😬 somehow I don’t believe that. 🙄
I probably thought it was too expensive or didn't take the Texaco credit card I had at the time. My parents let me have that for gas...until I figured out I could buy beer and gas at the Hoggly Woggly/Piggly Wigly? on the corner of Tennessee and Ocala Road.

Mine was a Shell credit card. Will never forget the call from my Dad asking how I could charge $300 a month in gas. That was an interesting conversation.

I would hit the Derby when dad was in town....only then.

^^^^This was my de facto ATM card. Let a buddy get $20 of gas on Daddy's Gulf credit card. Buddy gives me $15 cash. He won. I won. Daddy lost. Pretty sure Daddy knew all along what was going on, but he never said a word. I now show my son the same courtesy even though I have solved some of his "frauds" (especially with Uber rides.....he seemingly pays for all of them, and then others throw him discounted "reimbursements" on Venmo or whatever).

At the time, I assumed my parents were dumb, or at least super inattentive. I now realize they knew and saw a LOT MORE than they let on. Great memories. I try to do the same.

Great minds think alike. I had the same scheme going for what felt like forever. Back in the late 80’s everything was paper and it would take weeks if not months for the bills to come in. And when I figured out I could charge food and beer, my impending doom was greatly accelerated.

I also remember cashing checks on Fridays for weekend cash. $50 was typical. MAYBE $100 if I had a super hot date (but she needed to be special to warrant the 3-digit transaction). LOL.

Thank you for the very insightful critique.

Best thread I've seen on the LR since the mods "cleaned it up", and I didn't arrive at FSU until the late 90s.

I also was a server at the KAT house. Ate leftovers for FREE!
Leftovers? We fed our servers the regular food. They got the same lunch and dinner we did. One “mystery meat”, two veggies, one of which was a carb, rolls, and dessert. The leftovers were part of the lunch buffet the next day. 🤗

I bartended at the Phyrst 88-89. From what I remember Miller lite was $5. Meister Brau was cheaper but I’m not sure how much. Maybe a dollar less. And there was a higher end beer like Lowenbrau.
There was a bartender there around that time, it was a girl and everyone called her Mikey. Did you know her? She may have been just prior to ’88

So many memories, and lost memories in that place.

Tell me if any of you were there when this occurred. I was an 11th grader and far to young to be in the place. Not sure if it was the BD or the other big name club at the time which I can't recall the name of, but I am fairly certain it was the BD. It was the off season for FB and a couple of the players were there also. A couple of uf jerks kept riding around the building in an old VW bug yelling crap to the players who were standing out side on the steps. One the players who was not a little guy at all had enough and came off the steps and literally tackled the bug stopping it cold as he crushed the front wheel fender into the tire. He was so drunk I don't think he felt much pain but he did have to leave by ambulance. For a very small town country boy who lived in the boonies it made a helluva an impression on me. That would have been in the spring of 74.
