Yes, the companies get a write off as if they were donating, when in reality it was their customers are the ones donating.
But they do report it as income first, correct?

So your sense of principle is going to keep you from donating $1 to the Special Olympics through Publix when you know you wouldn't otherwise? That's a screwed up principle. If you want to donate to whatever cause they are supporting, donate it on your own. All the companies do is accept your money, donate it (which is good), and then write off a large chunk of money from their taxes. Much better to do it yourself so you get a write off instead of just essentially giving a company a tax cut (and yes, I realize it makes no sense to write off a dollar or whatever, but its the principle behind it, you are the one donating, you should be the one getting the credit).
Go to some of the Publix's in higher end neighborhoods. some Publix's are way nicer than others and it goes the same for HEB. I've seen some HEB's that were downright awful and far worse than any Publix. I haven't been to that many Wegmans, but the few I have been to were on par with middle to nicer Publix's, but certainly did t blow it away.Agree to disagree. The Wegmans and H.E.B stores I've been in blow Publix away
Fair enough. I agree competition is always a good thing.I've been to plenty of high end Publix locations. I have one by my house. Saying some HEBs are far worse than any Publix is subjective. I've seen some Publix stores that aren't the greatest. Again, your opinion and we'll agree to disagree.
HEB and Wegmans are, in MY opinion, better grocery stores than Publix, regardless of location.

I am not 100% sure on that, and I suppose it could vary between companies.
There goes that damn principle again.Yes, it would be a wash for them. Pick it up as other income, then deduct it as charitable donation.
