For those interested, as I am, on the growing literature that smartphones are very harmful to children and young adults:

https://edition-m.cnn.com/2018/07/3...w.democraticunderground.com/100210945194&rm=1

“The ban on smartphones as well as other kinds of internet-connected devices, such as tablets, applies to schoolchildren between 3 and 15 years of age, and was passed by lawmakers on Monday. French high schools, or lycées, with students 15 and older, will get to choose whether to adopt the phone ban for their pupils.

"We know today that there is a phenomenon of screen addiction, the phenomenon of bad mobile phone use... Our main role is to protect children and adolescents. It is a fundamental role of education, and this law allows it," said Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer on French news channel BFMTV.”

I think it is a good thing and do believe screen and internet addiction are a problem for our children. And actually not just for our children, given as I am likely making my bazillionth post on a message board.

It would be interesting to see something like that around here. Instead my daughter is encouraged to bring a tablet/smartphone to Middle School so she can use it when working on assignments. It was the same last year in Elementary School.

I have a bunch to say about this but it would probably turn political and thus get the thread locked, so I will refrain.

Sounds like a good idea that should find its way over here. Are there school districts that use a tablets in place of books at that age range?

Laptops in 6th grade at our school.

The screen time thing is a constant struggle.
The funny thing is the kids watch very little television. Maybe an hour or two a week. I watched a whole lot more than that when I was a kid and in college.

Ehh, I don't know. In my daughter's school they've integrated the devices into the curriculum so that they're made a part of learning. I've been amazed how much schoolwork she can accomplish on her phone. She can create and submit homework completely over the phone through Google Docs.

Like most things, I think the phone can be fine if it's used for good, rather than for evil.

I'm a fan of the law.

Parents use phones/devices to keep their kids quiet and pacified, got a feeling some teachers do the same.

My kids have smart phones, but I just assumed they had to be off at school. They have school issued laptops for their work which are locked down for the most part.

I'll ask them when I get a chance if their phones must be off. It never occurred to me that they may not be.

I have seen couples eat entire meals together on their phones.

A few times I’ve seen the wife eating quietly while the husband is surfing on his phone the whole time. They’re probably Googling ‘why is my sex life miserable?’

Crazy.
How about sporting events where everyone is buried in phone?! Next time you see a MLB game on TV take few minutes to watch how many people in 200-300 dollar seats behind backstop are on phone.

There is little to no social interaction witnessed at common places anymore. When’s the last time you saw two strangers have a random conversation in a waiting room, check out line, park bench, etc. Nearly everyone is buried into their phones these days and the personal communication is gone.

I was at the tire place the other day. Probably 15 people waiting in a small lobby. Every single person was on the phone and no talking between anyone for 45 minutes unless it was with a tire guy.

Society is a mess.

My 6 year old loves video games. We give him a 30 min cap per day but that gets exceeded often. They do games at camp, and friend’s houses. It can become irritating because if you let it, it can overtake all other activities.

Agreed. Banning the phones entirely isn't teaching responsible behavior, nor does it take advantage of the technological benefits. Set reasonable limits/guidelines and enforce them.

Do kids play outside anymore?

We used to play bball/football/bike ride around the neighborhood for at least a couple hours everyday.

A friend mentioned to me that his kids never have slumber parties anymore. We had those like at least once a week and for days on end during the summer. Are those a thing of the past as well?

They hang out online and watch webcams of each other.

Lol, I was blown away when I saw a kid watching a video of a guy playing a video game.
Ah yes Twitch.

I had a long chat with a 11 year old about that at a graduation party over the weekend.

Apparently the most watched video stream of all time (including things like the Super Bowl) was a live stream of Drake playing JuJu Smith Schuster, Steelers WR, in Fortnite.

This all seemed like gibberish to me, so I asked why? I hated watching other people play games b/c it just meant I was waiting my turn. The response was that they did it for "tips" on how to play the game better themselves.

None of this makes sense to me. Seems like there's an opportunity to just sell cheat and tip guides on the net so people don't waste their time watching random people play video games.

And these cheat guides would just be written steps? With pictures? Seems like it could be done better via.......video.

I remember buying those guides in the 90's when I got a new game but it was just pages of screen captures.
The most I can relate now is looking up how to beat Angry Birds levels on youtube a couple years ago.
