FSU 82 Winthrop 64 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
The Good
FSU improves to 9-3, 0-1 and with the win has its best OOC record since the 2019-202 season. The Seminoles finished out its non-conference schedule easily beating The Eagles taking control in the second half of the first period. With FSU leading 16-15 and 10:05 to play in the half, the 'Noles clamped down defensively and were on a roll closing out the period on a 29-12 run to lead 45-27 at intermission. It was much of the same in the second period where FSU increased its lead to 24. A small bump in the road saw Winthrop go on a 9-0 run to close it to 76-61. FSU regrouped and coasted to the victory in the final two minutes.
Winthrop, who were picked to finish 2nd in the Big South, is known as a team that plays aggressively. But tonight it was the Seminoles that was the more aggressive team by far. The Eagles were hounded by FSU's defense all game long unable to deal with FSU's length and athleticism. A decent shooting team, Winthrop was held to 30% from the floor, sixteen points under its average and connected on just 9 of 36 from the arc. On a related note, FSU leads the ACC in 3 point defense. On a side, side note, the 'Noles held the Eagles to 2 -16 in the 1st half.
FTs - The Eagles leads the country in the most trips to the charity stripe at 31.5 attempts per game. The Seminoles did an excellent job of playing solid defense and not make ill-advised silly fouls.
Rebounding. Winthrop averages 42 per game. Tonight FSU dominated the boards, 48-31. Again dealing with FSU's length was a problem for Winthrop.
Players of the game: As often is the case, Jamir Watkins with 23 points to go along with 4 assists. Malique Ewin with a double double, 21 points and 15 boards, 7 on the offensive end, Taylor Bol Bowen also with a double, 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Chandler Jackson with 14.
Plays of the game: Ewin with the pass to Jackson cutting down the lane for the lay up, 6-5. Justin Thomas intercepts the pass and races coast to coast, 16-13. Ewin with the off balance spin move for the lay up, 18-15.starting that 29-12 run.. Thomas with the hand off to Jackson with the uncontested drive along the left baseline to the rim and the lay up, 22-15. Dequan Davis with the up and under reverse lay up. Bol Bowen with five quick points off a three from the right corner and a slam off a lob from Watkins, 36-22. Ewin corrals his miss on a second attempt from the FT line and storms in for the lay in, 39-23. Bol Bowen with the offensive putback, 45-27 to end the half. Ewin on the clear out play for the lay up off the assist by Watkins, 52--35. Jackson grabs the rebound and races down the floor and the lay up, 54-35. Jerry Deng gets away with the long lob pass to Ewin. Malique showed patience and instead of forcing the slam dunk, he paused briefly while defenders got in the air and the laid the ball in. The highlight play of the game A steal leading to a 3 on 1 fast break. Passing the ball quickly between all three players, Jackson made a one handed touch pass to Bol Bowen thundering down the lane finishing with the slam dunk. Watkins with the three from the left corner followed immediately with another three. 74-49.
The Bad
The Eagles are 11th in the country in forcing turnovers at 16.9 per game. The Seminoles obliged in that area giving away the ball away 20 times (leading to 20 points for the Eagles) mostly with poor passing that often was too long In the first three plus minutes FSU turned it over 4 times. The 5th was not far behind when Ewin did far too much dribbling and lost the ball.
The lazy pass by Deng that was easily intercepted by Nick Johnson. Deng compounded the mistake with a foul, 59-42.
The four turnovers by the 'Noles during a 9-0 run by Winthrop, 76-61.
The Ugly
Well, it did not take the officials long to bring the game to a dead stop as they reviewed with just over two minutes gone a possible technical foul on FSU for what seemed like 10 plus minutes..
2 of 9 (but they shoot good in practice) from the arc, 22% on the first twenty minutes. Thankfully it improved in the second half.
Three straight possessions with 3 straight turnovers. Not exactly offensive efficiency there.
Smeinoles.com and their Gameday app that for some inexplicable reason was streaming some national show instead that talking about Connor McGregor rather than the pre=game show. I am relatively certain Connor is not on our team. They eventually took that off and for the entire remainder of the game listeners were treated to stone cold silence.

Louisville travels to Tallahassee on Saturday for a 2 PM tip. The game will be televised on the CW Network (no idea if Seminoles.com or their Gameday app will actually be streaming the game and not more Connor McGregor talk).. While the Cardinals are just 6-5, they are much improved under first year head coach Pat Kelsey compared to previous train wreck Kenny Payne.
