FSU adds Jon Wong as an assistant coach

Head Coach Chris Poole and the Florida State volleyball announced that Jon Wong will join the volleyball staff as an assistant coach.

"We are excited to add Jon Wong to our coaching staff. He is an Orlando native and has good contacts in the state," Poole said. "Jon has worked with some great coaches in the past and has gained a lot of experience with USA Volleyball as well."

"I am excited to be coming back home to the Sunshine State and am thankful for the opportunity to join Coach Poole and the rest of the staff. It has been impressive to see the level of consistency that Coach Poole has had during his tenure at FSU, and I am excited to help carry on the consistency as well as looking forward to continue building on the success of the FSU volleyball program. I am looking forward to getting in the gym with this talented group of women and see what we can do and what we can achieve," Wong said.

Wong brings over 10 years of coaching experience with some of the top programs in college volleyball. Wong most recently spent a year as an assistant coach where the Owls finishes 19-8 and made the semifinals of the AAC Tournament. At Rice, Wong primarily worked with the pin hitters where the Owls had one of the best offenses in the AAC. Rice ranked first in the conference in kills per set (14.02) and second in the conference in hitting percentage (.236).

"I want to thank Rice University and Coach Genny Volpe for giving me the opportunity to be a part of their program. Our family enjoyed our time on South Main, and I am grateful for the time I had with the amazing student athletes I got to surround myself with every day."

Prior to Rice, Wong was an assistant to the head coach for the National Champion Texas Longhorns in 2023. Wong provided the coaching staff with statistical analysis, opponent scouting, & undertake projects to address various needs/areas of improvement for the Texas volleyball program. He also helped the Longhorns earn two First Team All-America honors in Asjia O'Neal and Madisen Skinner.

Before making the move to Austin, Wong spent three years as the assistant coach at Texas Tech. Wong helped the Red Raiders make their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 20 years in 2021.

Wong also spent four years as an assistant coach at Bradley from 2016-2020 and helped the Braves to its most successful season since 2001 in 2018.

Wong spent a season at Tennessee in 2015 as the Director of Operations and Video Coordinator. Wong got his collegiate coaching career started in 2014 at South Florida as a volunteer assistant.

Wong was a recipient of the AVCA 30-under-30 award in 2019. The annual award honors up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport under the age of 30.

Wong also has nearly 10 years of experience in the USA Volleyball pipeline. Most recently, Wong was on the coaching staff that helped Team USA to the 2023 FIVB Girls' U19 Volleyball World Championship.

Wong is a graduate of Lindenwood University where he was a four-year letterwinner for the men's volleyball program. Wong helped Lindenwood to the 2009 NAIA National Championship as a setter and libero. Wong earned his master's in sport and fitness studies at FIU in 2014. Wong also spent a semester as a student at Florida State in 2007 and also spent a season as an assistant coach at Florida State University Schools.
