FSU sports information:
The No. 9 Florida State softball team (28-5, 5-0 ACC) fought off a fierce rally from No. 18 Duke (21-11, 4-4) in a 12-11 win on Saturday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium.
After a scoreless first inning, the Seminoles opened up the second inning with a couple of free passes to put Michaela Edenfield and Katie Dack on base. Jahni Kerr laid down a phenomenal bunt that squirted its way all the way to the outfield to score Edenfield. Hallie Wacaser singled to left field to bring home Dack, and the Noles were up 2-0.
Duke responded with a two-out single to cut the lead to one in the bottom of the second, but Ashtyn Danley stranded the bases loaded to keep the lead.
Edenfield and Kennedy Harp hit back-to-back singles, and with runners on second and third, Kerr laid down another great bunt to score Harp to start the two-out rally. Wacaser singled again to score Edenfield to make it 5-1. Angelee Bueno and Ashtyn Danley hit back-to-back singles for Isa Torres who delivered with a bases-clearing double to give the Seminoles an 8-1 lead.
Danley retired the side in order in the bottom of the third, and the FSU offense got right back to work as Jaysoni Beachum led off the inning with a double, and Harp hit an infield single to put runners on the corners for Edenfield who hit her 50th career home run to right center to give the Seminoles an 11-1 lead.
The Blue Devils started its rally in the bottom of the fifth inning as they hit a three-run home run to cut the lead to 11-4 and hit another two-run home run in the sixth to cut the lead to five.
The Seminoles added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Beachum doubled to right center to score Torres to make it 12-6.
The Blue Devils had one more rally in them as a two-run home run cut the lead to four. The Blue Devils used two errors, a single and a fielder’s choice to cut the lead to one with runners on second and third with two outs. A walk loaded the bases for the Blue Devils, but Danley forced a groundball to Beachum at third who was able to keep it in front of her and step on third base to end the game and give FSU the series win.
Danley picked up the win after pitching the first four innings and coming back to get the final two outs in the seventh. Danley allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out two.
Torres led the way offensively with three hits and three RBI. Wacaser and Edenfield each picked up three RBI on three hits. FSU tallied 17 hits on the day with 10 different players recording a hit.
FSU will look for the sweep over the ranked Blue Devils on Sunday at noon on ACCNX.
