FSU sports information:
A series of home runs in the second inning helped the No. 9 Florida State softball team (6-1) run rule its fourth opponent in a row, Ohio State (4-1), in a 9-1 win in five innings on Friday afternoon at the Shirners Children's Clearwater Invitational in Clearwater.
The Buckeyes got on the board first, but Ashtyn Danley got a ground ball to force a double play to help the Noles get out of the inning. The Noles came back from the early deficit in the bottom of the first when Kennedy Harp doubled and scored Jaysoni Beachum and Michaela Edenfield, who reached on base with a single and double, respectively. Harp scored on a Hallie Wacaser single, improving the score to 3-1. Harp has recorded a hit and a RBI in all six of the Seminoles' games this season.
The Noles added six more runs in the second with a solo home run from Jahni Kerr, a two-run shot by Isa Torres that scored Danley. Another two run shot by Edenfield, scoring Beachum who was put on base by a walk, and a solo home run by Harp, increasing the lead to 9-1. FSU has hit four home runs in each of its last three games. In all of 2024, FSU hit four or more runs four times. FSU's four home runs in the inning tied a school record for most home runs in a single inning. FSU hit four home runs last season against Purdue and in the 2019 Tallahassee Regional against USF.
After giving up four hits in the first inning, Danley settled in and allowed just one more hit in the next two innings to prevent the Buckeyes from gaining any momentum. Julia Apsel entered the game with a 9-1 lead in the fourth. Aspel closed out the game not giving up a run and striking out four of ten batters faced.
FSU will continue the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational tomorrow as they will face Wichita State at 7 p.m. The game will be on ESPN +.
