just saw on local TV that school suspended classes through next Friday the 15th.

This seems like a total over-reaction to me. Tallahassee has a 40% chance of Tropical Storm Force winds and the storm will be in northern Georgia/Alabama Monday evening. However we live in an era where everybody has to cover their ass. I live in Orlando and we are expected to be back at work on Tuesday assuming that it is safe to travel.

Irma won't make true landfall until Monday somewhere near Cedar Key and head north over Madison; with the number of kids who likely left and the hassles they'll run into trying to get back it remains to be seen whether it's an overreaction or not IMO. Back to work Tuesday would depend on how widespread power outages are.

Power was out around here for days. The campus itself took a surprising amount of time. This is a smart move. Let everyone concentrate on safety and evacuation. This storm could still totally miss the west coast of FL and slam right into Tally as a cat 4. After all of the false predictions thus far do you really trust this one?

Hey I will likely contact you to see what Orlando looks like. Was supposed to move my son to FullSail Friday. We are looking at late next week. Thanks

Any idea if the week-Long shut down is still in place?
Seems like it would be tough to un-shutdown as students will surely claim they "evacuated to their parents home in Belgrade and can't make it back in time for class on Wednesday without paying huge change fees."

Edit: so will the professor who left the country without posting Matthew Thomas' grades before fall camp

I live in Tallahassee. I think it is now clear that this was in fact an over-reaction. The smart thing would have been to have assessed the impact of the storm on Tallahassee and the campus before making a cancellation call of any more than Monday and Tuesday. That's what all the other governmental entities did including the state of Florida, city of Tallahassee and Leon County. There's a lot of parents who are out good money paid for a week of education, room and board that have now gone to waste.

Tough call. Had it gone the other way, with massive power outages, people would be raising hell too. But I agree it might have been wise to say "closed M-T, and stand by for further information." I wonder if this was a way of decisively canceling the Miami game without further consternation? I do think the Governor was anxious to "send a message."

I just got power back yesterday around 6pm. Most things are operational now...a few still without power. Some traffic lights still down. Could be tough to find a hotel room, but maybe not so much now that power is mostly back.

UF was back in class on Thursday. I am getting lots of flak about the clown school. UF also playing Tennessee this weekend.

Well they can't talk about their putrid football team so they HAVE to talk about something.
