Softball FSU sweeps Portland State

The Seminoles' offense exploded for 29 runs in two games as the No. 10 Florida State softball team (22-5) picked up two wins on Tuesday against Portland State (4-18). FSU defeated the Vikings, 11-0, in six innings in game one and, 18-5, in game two.

Game 1 (FSU 11 Portland State 0; 6 inn.)
The Noles jumped out to a 5-0 lead and capped it off with a six-run sixth inning to defeat the Vikings 11-0 in six innings in the first game of the doubleheader.

Jaysoni Beachum got the Noles on the board with her seventh home run of the year in the first inning. Kennedy Harp singled and immediately stole second. She eventually reached home on a passed ball and a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

The Noles added another run in the second inning as Amaya Ross led off the inning with an infield single. Ross stole second and moved over to third on a groundout. Isa Torres beat out a throw to score Ross to give the Noles a 3-0 lead.

Harp and Michaela Edenfield reached base in the third inning thanks to a hit-by-pitch and a walk. The two advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, and Hallie Wacaser and Shelby McKenzie each picked up a RBI on groundouts.

After a couple of scoreless innings, the Noles exploded for six runs in the sixth inning. Jahni Kerr and Annabelle Widra led off the inning with back-to-back innings, and Torres singled up the middle to score Kerr. Harp scored Widra on a sacrifice fly, and Madi Frey doubled to right center to bring in another run. Frey eventually scored on a passed ball, and Annie Potter picked up an RBI on a groundout.

Makenna Reid was phenomenal in her home state as she went four innings and allowed just two hits while striking out six, including five in the first two innings. Reid was credited with the win and improved to 27-2 all-time in her FSU career. Widra pitched the final two innings, did not allow a hit and struck out four of the six batters she faced.

Game 2 (FSU 18 Portland State 5)
The Noles' offense picked up right where they left off to start game two as the scored four runs in the opening frame. Beachum and Harp drew back-to-back walks, Edenfield reached on an error to load the bases for Wacaser. Wacaser delivered with a two-RBI single to put the Noles up 2-0. Ashtyn Danley picked her first of three hits of the game to score Wacaser and Edenfield.

The Vikings got one back in the top of the first, but starter Mimi Gooden settled in and didn't allow any more harm in the first.

Gooden continued to stifle the Vikings as threw an immaculate inning and went on to strike out five consecutive batters between the second and third innings.

Danley picked up her third RBI of the game as she scored Wacaser on a single in the third inning to make it 5-1.

The Noles had another big inning in the fourth where they scored five more runs to go up 10-1. Beachum and Harp both singled with Beachum eventually scoring from third on a wild pitch. Edenfield doubled to left field to score Harp. Frey pinch ran for Edenfield and scored on a wild pitch. Katie Dack and Danley picked up a couple of singles, and Angelee Bueno picked up a RBI on a sacrifice fly. McKenzie singled to center field to plate the Noles' final run of the inning.

The Vikings responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a couple of scoreless innings, the Noles had one last big inning in them as they scored eight in the top of the seventh.

A couple of walks and an error loaded the bases for Frey who picked up the RBI on a hit-by-pitch, and Wacaser put a ball in play to score Beachum. Addie DeLong hit a sacrifice fly to score Harp until Ross doubled into left to score Frey. An error by the center fielder plated two more runs on the board, and Torres put the icing on the cake with a two-run home run over the left field fence.

The Noles will begin ACC play at home when they take on Pitt for Legacy and Legends weekend. Game one of the series will be at 6 p.m. on ACCNX.
 
Gooden’s immaculate inning was pretty cool. Funny thing was, probably 6 of those 9 pitches were balls.
