FSU sports information:
The No. 8 Florida State softball team (11-1) gutted out two wins over Southeastern Louisiana (9-5) on Thursday evening at the JoAnne Graf Classic at JoAnne Graf Field. FSU won game one 5-0 and took down the Lions 5-4 in nine innings in the nightcap.
Game 1
The Noles got a great pitching performance from Julia Apsel and Jazzy Francik and used some timely hitting to defeat the Lions 5-0 in the first game of the day.
Neither team recorded a hit in the first two innings, but the Noles got things going in the third inning as an Isa Torres single and a walk Kennedy Harp set the stage for Michaela Edenfield. Edenfield delivered with a triple to right field to give the Noles a 2-0 lead.
The Lions threatened in the top of the fifth inning, but Francik came and shut the door to strand a runner at third.
Torres singled up the middle again to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning, and Edenfield and Katie Dack drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Hallie Wacaser. Wacaser was hit by a pitch to bring the runner home to make it 3-0.
The Lions got some momentum in the top of the sixth as a double and an error put runners on second and third with one out. Francik came through in the clutch again and forced two ground balls to keep the Lions off the board.
Jaysoni Beachum picked up an RBI single to give the Noles some insurance, and Annie Potter scored on a wild pitch to give the Noles a 5-0 cushion. Francik retired the Lions in the top of the order to earn her second save of the season.
Julia Apsel got the start in the circle and was terrific as she went 4.1 innings and allowed just three hits while striking out two. Apsel improved to 2-0 on the season.
Game 2
The Noles needed some late-game heroics in game two to come from four runs down to sweep the doubleheader.
The Lions jumped all over the Noles in the first two innings to build a 4-0 lead. Ashtyn Danley came in to relieve Francik and stifled the Lion offense for the final seven innings. Danley pitched seven scoreless innings, allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high nine batters. Danley has recorded 16 strikeouts in her last two outings.
The Noles were unable to get anything going on offense until Amaya Ross singled, and Krystina Hartley reached on an error to put runners on the corners in the bottom of the third inning. Torres reached on a fielder's choice and picked up the RBI as Ross came home to score to give the Noles their first run of the game.
Ross led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk, and Torres came through again with a RBI-double to cut the lead to two.
The Noles were unable to get anything going in the sixth, but the rally started with a Hartley walk in the bottom of the seventh. Torres ripped on into left field to score Hartley, and Beachum singled through the left side to put runners on the corners for one of the hottest hitters in the country, Kennedy Harp. Harp delivered with a single to tie the game and ultimately send it into extra innings.
Danley retired eight consecutive batters to end the game to set the stage for a walk off for the Noles.
Much like the seventh inning, Hartley walked to get the rally going, and Torres singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Both Hartley and Torres moved up a base to put two runners in scoring position for Beachum. Beachum delivered with a base hit to right field to give the Noles the walk-off victory.
The Noles will finish off the JoAnne Graf Classic tomorrow with a doubleheader against No. 6 Texas A&M beginning at 3 p.m. on ACC network extra.
