FSU women's tennis edges Miami

The Florida State women’s tennis team (11-4, 2-3 ACC) defeated No. 50 Miami (8-6, 3-2) 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.

Florida State started the match with the lead on all three doubles courts. Laura Putz and Maelie Monfils won the first match of the afternoon, defeating Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Aely Arai 6-1 on Court 3. Putz and Monfils improved to 4-0 with their victory, including a 3-0 record in ACC play. With a deadlocked match on Court 2, No. 89-ranked Eva Shaw and Maria Juliana Parra Romero took control on Court 1. The pair clinched the doubles point for FSU, defeating No. 25 Xinyi Nong and Raquel Gonzalez 6-2. It was the duo’s highest-ranked win of the season and improved their record to 11-0 this spring. Shaw and Parra Romero’s 11-match winning streak is the sixth-longest streak in FSU history.

Miami began singles earning victories on both Courts 1 and 3 to take a 2-1 lead. Parra Romero tied the match at 2-2 after a straight-sets victory on Court 5, defeating Arai 6-4, 6-3. The Hurricanes earned another victory on Court 2, taking a 3-2 lead. On Court 5, Putz won her first set and found herself trailing 4-2 in the second set. Putz went on to win five of the next six games and defeat Maria Paula Vargas 6-4, 7-5. With the score tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to Court 4. After losing the opening set, Millie Bissett battled back to defeat Nong 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the match for Florida State.

Parra Romero won her 10th singles match of the season and has now won three matches in a row. Putz earned her second victory from Court 6 this season and improved to 7-2 overall this spring. Bissett improved her conference record to 3-3 after her match-clinching win on Court 4.

Florida State will hit the road to Dallas for a match against No. 62 SMU. The match is set to begin on Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
