FSU women's tennis edges No. 62 SMU

The Florida State women’s tennis team (12-4, 3-3 ACC) defeated No. 62 SMU (8-10, 2-5) 4-3 on Friday evening at the Styslinger-Altec Tennis Center in Dallas.

Doubles began with SMU earning a victory on Court 2. No. 89-ranked Eva Shaw and Maria Parra Romero found themselves down 5-3, after taking an early 3-2 advantage. The pair battled back, winning four of the next five games to defeat Sophia Llewellyn and Caroline McGinley 7-6 (3) on Court 1. The final doubles court came down to another 6-6 tiebreak. With a 5-5 tie, Laura Putz and Maelie Monfils won the next two points to win the match 7-6 (5) and clinch the doubles point for the Seminoles.

The Mustangs won the first three singles matches of the evening on Courts 2, 3, and 4 to take a 3-1 lead. Parra Romero began to swing the momentum the Seminoles way earning a straight sets victory on Court 5, defeating Schefke 6-4, 6-4. After dropping the opening set on both Courts 1 and 6, Shaw and Putz both won their second sets to extend the match. No. 112-ranked Shaw defeated Llewellyn 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Court 1 to tie the match 3-3. On Court 6 Laura Putz won 12 of the next 16 games to defeat McGinley and clinch the match for Florida State.

Shaw and Parra Romero are now one win shy of tying the school record for consecutive doubles wins at 13. The pair improved their record to 12-0 this season, including a 5-0 record in ACC play. Putz and Monfils continue to find success from Court 3, winning their fourth consecutive match and improving their record to 4-0.

Shaw continues to shine in ACC singles play, improving her conference record to 5-1 from the Court 1 position. Parra Romero won her third match of the season at Court 5 and is currently on a three-match win streak. Putz has now won two in a row from Court 6 and improved to 7-2 overall this season.

Florida State will return home for its next four matches beginning with No. 26 California on Friday at 4:00 p.m. followed by No. 28 Stanford on Sunday at noon. Admission is free to all Florida State home tennis matches.
