We had pages on the May-Mc farce, so I'm hoping we can generate at least a few posts about the real biggest fight of the year in boxing.

Been really looking forward to this one for a while. I think the experts are highly underestimating Alvarez.

By the way, if you don't want to come off the hip for the PPV, many theaters are showing the card through Fathom events. Pretty good deal at about $20. Got tickets for my son and me. If you've never been to a fight closed circuit, if you get a decent crowd it can be a lot of fun.

I've never done a fight or concert in a theater via closed circuit. Maybe I'll do it this time.

If you get a good crowd and a good fight, it's a ton of fun. Last one I went to was Mayweather - Maidana 1, which was a pretty good and close fight, especially for a Mayweather fight, and it was pretty electric. This certainly seems like a can't-miss fight.

The downside is that unless you're showing up mid-way through or something, is you're kind of married to sitting through the undercard bouts. The three undercard bouts for this card are fine, but hardly anything that I'd qualify as a can't miss. Hopefully they'll turn out to be entertaining scraps. But especially with college football in full swing, it's pretty tough to pass on the Clemson-Louisville game. If the FSU-Miami game hadn't been cancelled, I'm not sure I'd be going.

Another interesting twist...broadcast starts at 8pm. I can't remember the last boxing PPV that started before 9pm. Frequently the main event is stretched to an after midnight start, which can make for a tough night. Traditionally they've tried to push the start of the main until whatever big event is going has finished (main college football game, NBA playoffs, etc), but I guess they've decided not to do so this time. I'm hoping this means we'll get a main event between 10:30 and 11, as another disadvantage of going to the theater is the awkwardness of falling asleep. I hope...if I get there at 8 and the main doesn't kick off to 12:15 I'll be pretty pissed off.

As someone who is trying to raise a fight fan child, these late starts (HBO had a triple header start at 10:15 last Saturday) make it almost impossible. This would be a good move if they want to try to salvage some interest among young people.

Neither one of these have the name to pull in the average person to want to follow along. I think boxing is reaching that point where only the die hards really follow it, even for big name fights. One of those has to somehow become enough of a personality to capture America's attention like Tyson did in the past, or for better or worse, the last farce did.

Saw Canelo vs. Kirkland in Houston. He's a good fight. But probably not until the class of GGG. Going to watch the fight at a cousins house. It will be decidedly a pro-cinnamon party.

I'm coming around to Alvarez in this fight. Maybe it's the influence of my son, Canelo is his favorite fighter and he called Canelo winning after the GGG-Jacobs fight.

I think Canelo is being seriously underrated because of his quality of opposition, especially his power. He's looked just "okay" at times...but you got to look at who he's fighting. The guys he doesn't knock out aren't being KO'd by anyone. I don't know if he'll win, but I think he's got an excellent chance, and I think he's going to test GGGs chin more than people are expecting.

I think this will be a very entertaining dight,. Two heavy handed fighters who like to sit in the pocket for the most part and let go. I am pulling for GGG and hope that him being a little more technical makes the difference.
Speaking of HBO Saturday, did you see chocolatito get pasted? That was awesome!

I've been looking forward to this fight for a long time. I got my son into boxing a few years ago watching GGG. We haven't missed a GGG fight since.

If GGG knocks out Canelo, which I think he will, who does he fight next. Unfortunately, boxing's most popular fighter is in arguably its weakest division.

I've been saying for at least 3 years that Golovkin is the best P4P fighter alive - when I first started watching him, none of his fights got out of the 2nd round. Now I find myself hoping that Saul wipes the canvas with him. Gennady is a really nice guy, but I'm sick of people riding his jock, I would rather hear much less of that. Something about Alvarez irked me when I saw him early on, but whatever it was has long been forgotten.

I like Canelo but Trip G is probably gonna knock him out. Hoping for a good fight, I've been looking forward to this match up for a while. With the FSU game being rescheduled, will make it easier to watch the fight.

Going to a movie theater to sit for hours watching boxing with general viewing audience seems like a terrible idea and I would never do it. Partly why I don't like going to theaters to see actual movies.

What kind of crowds are posting at a movie theatre to watch a fight? America's best and brightest? I am thinking concealed carry might be a good idea, along with Jim Cantore's Kevlar hurricane vest/helmet. No?

I don't know, but I'd rather pay the 79.99 than pay 20 bucks a pop to drive to a theater to sit with random people for four or five hours and drive back home and have the comforts of being at home drinks, food, bathroom, etc.

We had a nice little viewing party at a friends house for the Mayweather/McGregor fight where we all pitched in 25 bucks for the fight, beverages, and food and it was well worth it, but none of us are boxing snobs and talked about how much a farce a fun fight was....

I assume everyone has a decent flat screen 1080 TV these days so I'd avoid movie theaters at all cost imo.

The same reason people go to live sporting events. Well, some people do at least. People forget very quickly that it's a broadcast and it takes on a live atmosphere, with cheering, applauding, etc.

It's exciting in the same way going to a game is exciting. Your whole list is why you would never go to an FSU game in Doak also, which is fine, some people feel that way.

I think a lot of people resist the way that Alvarez was "annointed" by the time they'd ever seen him fight.

I'm a big fan of GGG, a bigger fan than I am of Alvarez, but I think there's a chance he's got a problem. His opposition, in comparison to Alvarez's, really is pretty pathetic. It's the best he had to work with, no doubt, but it doesn't change the fact that he really hasn't faced much better than B- opposition. And to your point, as his opponents have gotten slightly better, and he's gotten a little older, he's less Tyson and more Klitschko.

Now, Klitschko was great in his own way, but it's not the same. But unlike Klitschko, GGG has been taking flush shots in his fights. He seems to have a very sturdy beard, so I don't think Canelo is going to knock him out with one punch or anything, but I think there's a difference between taking 4-5 flush shots in a fight, and taking 4-5 flush shots around. I think Canelo is a more powerful puncher than people appreciate, and I don't think it's out of the question that he breaks GGG down by the end.

I think if it's a close, good fight, a rematch is possible. But if he wipes him out, I think they've got to revisit a fight with Ward at 168. I just don't see another big fight for either guy otherwise, since Stevenson won't fight Ward. I don't know if GGG could make 154, but if so, there will be a drumbeat for Mayweather to unretire for sure.

That was a pretty awesome card. Really enjoyed the Estrada-Cuadras fight. I hope they make Srasiket-Estrada next, and on TV.

It's always a little tough to see a great fighter like Chocolatitio go out like that, but I do kind of like when a torch gets passed clean and definitively.

A note...if you're going to watch this fight, as I mentioned the card starts at 8pm...and De La Hoya has guaranteed that the main event starts before 11 est...so they're legit moving it all up an hour. So if you were planning to tune in for the main event about 11:30 like most PPV fights, it might be too late.

I like the move I think...it does make things a little easier, and I guess 3am is easier than 4am for the European viewers. I wonder how many people will tune in late an miss it though.

Well, I'll be there, and I'm terrifying as everyone knows.

But what you're really getting at...yes, there might be some brown people there because they like boxing. But on the plus side, you won't have to worry about any of them being in superhero costumes.

i actually think watching football on T.V. is better than going to the game (probably only sport imo where live isn't better) but I can't make the comparison to that to seeing a fight at a movie theater, particularly with better price value for what I said above.

Sure, like I said, a lot of people do like TV better. And obviously, I watch the vast majority of my boxing on TV. But once in a while, it's a fun experience, as people act as if it was live...cheering, clapping, etc. It can be pretty electric and exciting. A full bar of people watching can be similar as well.

Both weighed in a 160 on the dot. Canelo looks ripped. GGG looks a little drawn, but I don't usually watch weigh-ins, so maybe he looks the same as always.

Lou, how old are you and how did you become such a big boxing fan? I actually would probably watch this fight but I don't know anyone else who cares and will prob just end up watching Clemson Louisville at a friends house.

Yeah, the Clemson Louisville game is why I won't be seeing it live just waiting for the replay. But it should be an excellent fight, I literally just read an article saying this will be the best boxing match....."in history!"

@Nole Lou canelo is the thicker fight in the upper body for sure. My biggest concern as a GGG fan is his age. You saw it with Pacman, one fight they are invincible, next they are getting knocked out and losing multiple fights in a row. I think this will be a great fight if GGG hasnt hit the wall yet.

Not Lou, but I am 39 and born and raised in NY. Boxing is huge here, especially in the Bronx, the Puerto Ricans and Mexicans love boxing. It was mostly barbershop talk for me growing up during the Tyson/Roy Jones/Oscar/Trinidad era...dudes would talk about who was the baddest man for hours!

I'm 45 and from Buffalo. I love boxing because my father did. While boxing was more popular in the 1980s, by the late 80s it wasn't that popular outside of Tyson. I was always a bigger fan than anyone else my age. Bobby Chacon-Cornelius Boza Edwards was the first fight that hooked me good.

I did walk away from it for about ten years between 1993-2002, so other than a handful of events I missed an entire era. I have pretty much a complete blank spot where the primes of Mosley, DLH, Whitaker, Trinidad, etc should be. I caught them at their starts or on their way down, though.

Same with me Lou, except i stopped watching around 95 and started around 2009. It isn't the same as it was when I was a kid, but I enjoy watching with my son

@Nole Lou why am I getting the Spanish announcers on this undercard?

LOL no idea. I'm sitting dead center in front of an imax screen, with the right commentary track.

Crowd is reserved and quiet though. Too rich an area. Next time I'll be going back to a theater in a slightly more middle class diverse area.

The giant screen though is really spectacular.

so excited for this fight....glad it is finally here
This is going to be great theater for boxing fans..

Trilpe G has looked so reserved tonight, cant figure out if it is nerves , contentment ( money) or focus

Fight is pretty solid so far. Canelo is extremely active early, not sure he can sustain this if it goes the distance. GGG saving his energy.

How anyone could score that fight 118-110 for Alvarez is beyond me... I thought 116-112 for GGG, maybe 115-113.

I am watching on ATT Uverse, is anyone else experiencing terrible stoppages in the audio/video

Ridiculous...this is why boxing is fading in popularity.

The judges must have used the Pacquaio Scoring System in this fight
