help me understand Noles hating on each other

I started the post about a poll seeking opinions on which license plate people liked better. I have been a money manager for 15 years and my clients appreciate what I do for them and I take great pride in serving them. This is not a post about using a money manager versus buying an index fund. My answer to that is simple: just invest money as often as you can either with help or without it, especially in your 401k (pre-tax plus hopefully appreciation until you withdraw the funds) and ESPECIALLY if your company matches your contribution. Depending on an individual's situation, you can make a case for either active guided management or low cost indexing. But I digress.

Anyway, many people responded with their preference in plate. thank you to those. I'm sure many others just ignored the thread cause they thought it was dumb or just didn't care. That's cool. What I don't get is the vitriol and rank hatred from fellow Noles. I've always thought of our fan base as classy and Gator fans as generally nasty and jerks. Many of the responses to my post showed that's not quite the case.

Not rhetorical, truly curious: why the hate? why not just ignore a post that doesn't interest you?

forgot to mention: for those that might say, well you posted it in the Locker Room, what did you expect. I didn't post it there. It started in the TC and a mod moved it to the Locker Room when it started to get ugly.

This has gone on as long as the Locker Room has existed. You aren't the first to get your panties in a wad about something that you thought would be innocent but became a feeding frenzy. You won't be the last. Previous victims weren't newbies to board either. It's too bad there doesn't exist a graveyard board for the threads of destroyed posters. i.e. The guy who had an Osceola mural. B.I.F. whose daughter was getting "Derek"ed. and so many more.

It's nothing serious and certainly nothing personal (except for Ronnie)

Stick around, have fun. There will be another innocent along shortly...

Part of posting a poll or any topic really is to gather opinions from others. It was clear that many folks don't think vanity plates are a good thing- so option C was the poll winner.

Are you upset people gave their opinions and they were different from your own? Look if you are a vanity plate kind of guy- fire away. Just realize many people think they are really just an easy way to identify a douche on the road (right or wrong, info you should just understand going in).

If anything I think the thread was very valuable feedback if you can't handle the differing thoughts the LR is probably not the best place to find an echo chamber supporting flamboyant life decisions.

You just have to take it in stride man. I treat the locker room like a locker room, mostly bustin' stones and goofin on one and other. If you get three jackass comments for every serious comment, I'd call that a LR win.

I think you should get RBMYCR, or KEMYCR, I mean, just get strait to the point with it, because that's what's going to happen to it anyway with a vanity plate like that!

And every once in a while you will get excellent advice like that above, where it's both funny AND good advice. A proverbial Win/Win!

4life1,
I don't have a problem with people disagreeing about anything. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I was just surprised at the hate directed at a fellow Nole.

You definitely bring up a valid point.
Our intent was not to hate on you, I can assure you of that.
Unless someone in that thread knows you specifically.

Re-read through the thread with slightly thicker skin, and you may enjoy it more.

As for your money comments, I couldn't agree more.

Please do not let this prevent you from posting in the LR in the future.
Using satire and puns is one of the few things we do best here.
Some of us have been posting here for 5-10 years, so we forget to be gentle with new people from time to time.
So if we haven't offended you too much, and you realize we're just having fun.
You really should keep starting threads with topics you find interesting.

Hang out here long enough, you will no longer be surprised.

as freefly said- gotta treat it like an actual locker room. People are gonna bust balls. I know personally my friends and I are complete aholes to each other. If my buddy pulled up in his new car with a vanity plate I would completely rip into him and make a joke at his expense- might even earn a new nickname if its bad enough.

You're new, this happens. If you get over the butt hurt and stick around for a while you will eventually be a part of the ball bustin. Nothing is off limits so no matter what you post about you will get some smart ass responses. That's why your thread got moved here. There will be some solid, serious responses too, no matter the topic (like Free said). As a group this place has expertise in everything so you are sure to find some nuggets of wisdom amongst the swamp of butt hurt.

I'm surprised no one has thrown in a "Lighten up, Francis," yet.

What you need to understand is that the "hate" wasn't directed at you, but more so at the generalized idea of the kind of people who get vanity plates. "A paper published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology in 2008 found that drivers with vanity plates, bumper stickers and other "territory markers" were far more likely to use their vehicles to express rage-by honking, tailgating and other aggressive behavior."

OK.
Lighten up Francis.

I thought vanity plates were just an expensive version of a bumper sticker.

I read it could be from having small penis syndrome.

I'll give you the answer - nay, the truth - of why people in here seem to need to express themselves negatively and hurtfully.

But first I'm going to need to see pics of your wife.

This place has gone to hell.

Hey OP, vanity plates are about as cool as tattoos, team jerseys, and pocket dogs.

Congrats on cheering for the same university I and a couple million others do. Doesn't make you my homie, M1y mgr. I bet you have a sweet cubicle, btw. Doosh.

I'm in the camp that we should try to be polite to each other. Lately, it has been us against the world.

Sometimes I have mildly heated arguments with people on here, but generally speaking I like things civil. If I want to argue in the middle of the day I'll call the wife.

I guess to some degree this is true, but it got really nasty at some point. It wasn't always like this. I myself started out here asking some really dumb questions and the people on the board at that time gently corrected me to post on the correct board, look for pre-existing thread, etc. I don't think that would happen today.

Conversely, I have more than enough polite, well-reasoned interactions thoughout the course of my days. I come on here primarily for the sarcasm, snark, and indiscriminate dog-piling.

It'd be cruel and mean-spirited if it were only aimed at one person all the time, or if we sincerely felt/believed the vast majority of what we throw out there, but we don't. It's our equivalent of exchanging "yo momma" jokes: we don't actually know your mother, but that doesn't keep us from telling you that yo momma's so ugly that even the tide won't take her out.

We were all a lot more pleasant when there were asset threads, even after the pepperoni law was added.

I was one of the ones who actually gave input about your two choices, even though I personally would never put a vanity license plate on my car. This is the locker room, so you are going to get a bit of everything. Most of the negative posters mean nothing personal, although a few take it over the edge.

Just my opinion, but I do think you should ask yourself the question: what am I trying to accomplish by putting this vanity plate on my car, and how is it going to be perceived by the ones who see it?

No, he should be asking himself why he's putting a poll on the locker room based on what his wife wants him to do.

I posted a thread a few months ago about dating a gator. I did it in fun, knowing what kind of responses I would get. It's the locker room.

I think since the political/religious topics have gone away, some posters have moved on, and others have gone to other FSU boards. There's a new crowd and it trends a bit differently.

I'm under no obligation to be nice to you simply because we attended the same school. Vanity tags are for douchebags. Apparently you're also a pansy ass. Nice combo.

OP,

C'MON MAN! Some of those posts were hilarious. Are you a woman? I am not sure all woman (please note there are some cool woman that do understand the concept and are even good at bustin balls but thinking most don't do the same thing with their girlfriends) understand the concept of guys bustin each others balls so to speak is why I ask.

If a man, do you not ever bust on your friends all in good fun or do your friends not ever bust on you or each other, especially if it is a choice you made that they disagree with or bust on you about having to ask your wife's permission to do anything, etc? I thought it was pretty much something all guys have been a part of. Or even do you have 1 friend that is always busting everyone's balls? Well the locker room has plenty of those in here. Just go into your posts knowing that and you will find humor in them as long as you can laugh at yourself and appreciate different senses of humor.

Get one thing straight, conform or be cast out...

Rules:

No vanity plates
No team jerseys unless you're 10 or younger
No mainstream music
No jhorts
No cable tv
No tipping less than 30%
No driving a vehichle older than 2 model years unless it's vintage and fully restored
No liking any other college team or city other than FSU and Tallahassee
No fast food
No participating in a proposed whiteout or blackout
No wearing team gear unless you're at a game then it's polo shirts only
No light beer
No well liquor
No cutting your own grass
No changing your own oil
No flying coach
No staying off property if vacationing at Disney

And that's just for starters...

Very true CMan.

There's also:

No referring to any woman as attractive unless she is a world class supermodel in which case she is a "7"
No middle ground. That means politicians on opposite parties are worse than Hitler and movies either suck or are amazing.
No vaginas allowed....usually. There is a maximum of five slots available FOR slots after which we must run some of them out. Also known as the 5/4 slot rule.

For males: No shirts, no shoes = no service.
For females: No shirts, no shoes = free beer.

Wow, I fail on a bunch of these... I'm only a 47% match for a true LR male.
