Got a call from our youngest who's away at school. She was distraught because a friend of a friend had been killed while hiking. Feel so bad for this kid's parents.

There are no guarantees in life, and any of us can go at any almost any time. Sometimes it is hard to grasp just how fleeting life can be.

Treading lightly here, but at least the kid was having fun and going for it. This is so much more palpable than a silly car wreck, a drive by, or a long down hilll struggle with addiction or chronic diseases.
Count me as one who would prefer to go out in a similar way.
My sympathies for all involved.

Freakish accident, apparently hit by a dislodged boulder, horrible. We have Crabtree Falls up here near Charlottesville, spectacular falls and hike IF you stay on the trail. So many college age kids don't and have slipped off the wet, algified rocks to their deaths. Plenty of signs around the falls warning people as well.

Or a useless suicide that no one saw coming. I feel for those parents.

I lost a friend at FSU while I was home at my parent's one summer - he and a friend were having stupid beer-infused fun around campus. My friend wanted to smash an empty bottle on a street sign so he leaned out of the Jeep to stretch for it; the driver thought he'd help, so he swerved sharply toward the sign. I was told Jerry got his torso split open by the sign and took a few very hard days to die. I knew none of this until I suggested getting him as a 4th for golf.

Plenty of senseless deaths around major universities - there was one guy who tried to do a handstand on the rail of the upper deck at The Pub, and ended up face-planting on Tennessee St. instead.

All in the name of "fun"....with a healthy dose of natural selection

Yep,

I have no clue if true, but gotta guess if your son lost his life while “living large”, you, his mom and your daughter may not have gone through as much of the stress that has made life so unreal hard in recent years.
What exactly I mean by living large, well dunno. Just living for the moment rather than checking out, I guess. One of my best buddies has lived thru a similar time as his wife lost her son to an out of the blue suicide.
Hang tuff, Manch.

Bill, my son was real close to my in-laws and spent alot of time caring for them while they were terminally ill. My MIL passed in March of 2015, and shortly after, my FIL moved in with us, and we gave him and my son the big bedroom. We found my FIL on Sept. 13th, 6 months after my MIL passed. So he lost both his maternal grandparents. The morning after my FIL passed, we went up to the room to get clothes for his viewing and we found my son, unresponsive. We called 911 and performed CPR. The medics got a pulse back, but it was too late. They transferred him from a hospital in Concord, NH, to a pediatric intensive care hospital in Manchester, my wife went with him in the ambulance, and she sent me home to get him clothes for when he woke up. I already knew he was gone. A few hours later we had the doctor pull the plug. We think he was so distraught, that he ended it. On his way to bed the night before, he asked me if I wanted to go upstairs and stay with him and I told him that I was gonna stay with his mother because she was inconsolable. His last words to me were that I didn't understand. I am f'n haunted by those last words, I had no f'n clue or idea. I told him to come and stay with us, that I would blow up the air mattress.

We were blindsided, I guess. I second guess myself every minute.

We heard a bit about this on wspa which wifey listens to for news sometimes. There are routinely deaths in our region due to folks getting off trail/walkway near the numerous waterfalls. Apparently he was with a crowd and some were bouldering near the falls, but no report as to whether he was ahead of others or behind. I wonder if someone above inadvertently loosened the rock that crushed him. Speculation is that it weighs approx. 1,000 #s.
We are in a cycle of freeze and thaw here lately which loosens the ground and along with gravity makes it very easy for slides and soil/rock movement to happen.
Our sympathy goes out to the family.
