At least 27 people were killed and 27 injured in a mass shooting at a Texas church this morning, a law enforcement official told ABC News.

The alleged shooter, who has not been identified, is dead, and there is no longer an active threat at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, about 40 miles southeast of San Antonio, police told ABC News.

My friends abroad continue to ask me what the hell is going on in America. "Freedom" I say. "Don't you know we're the greatest country in the world," I ask.

Luckily, we won't have to dwell on this horrific Texas tragedy too long as our next mass shooting should happen in the coming days. At which point we can once again send thoughts and prayers.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Witness to Sutherland Springs church shooting: a neighbor shot suspect causing him to leave the scene.

Texas church shooter was court-martialed in 2012 for assault on his spouse and child. He received a Bad Conduct Discharge. As a result, he was forever banned under federal law from ever possessing a firearm.

Thank god for the neighbor.....

And the mass murder in Las Vegas sinks even deeper in our collective memory. By New Years it will have sunk down to the level of the 49 people murdered at Pulse in Orlando.

Sounds like he bought this gun at Academy Soorts in Txas. Don't understand how, as a dishonorable discharge and domestic violence history should have been disqualifying and shown up in the routine background check.

Thank god for the neighbor.....We should move swiftly to outlaw murder.
Nah, criminals would just do it anyway and then fine upstanding Americans would be stripped of a freedom. Better to remove all laws since criminals don't heed them anyway.

Huge implications here, security wise, for all public events. There is some modicum of “screening” that goes on prior to the commencement of sporting events. But is anyone monitoring the gates in, say, the late third quarter?

Not that anyone would ever expect to encounter security at church — before, during or after — but I think this idiot may have sketched out a blueprint that event organizers should be mindful of. Not sure where (or if) the craziness ends.
