How bad was your hs football team?

Freshman year, our varsity was middle of the road, no real amazing talent... we piddled around my soph and junior years. My senior year we went 3 deep in the playoffs before losing to the Highland Park of Waco. The class behind me was stacked with talent. One of our LBs played for the Titans for a few years and started for a year after Bullock left. One kid went to Miami (FL) for a year, redshirted then transferred to LSU and rode the bench behind Toefield and Addai, then transferred to Houston and started for 2 years. A kid two classes behind me got a split scholly to Ga Tech for basketball and football. Made it a semester then got kicked out for smoking the green.

Our QB and three WR from that team went to state in the 4 x 100 with a time of like 41.90 or something ridiculous.

And @NDallasRuss, your squad is a quality 5A team now... in a district with Little Elm and 4 or 5 of the Frisco high schools.

Whose was it?

I was just joking about really buying one, but I did see an FSU MNC ring in a pawn shop on Tennessee St. in 2004 or so. I was pretty familiar with the team, but didn't recognize the name on it. Maybe it was some walk-on or staffer. It was selling for $1,200 IIRC. It still made me sad that someone would give that up.

I looked up the season records and I'm surprised they've done that well in a district with the Frisco schools.

They've had a couple of decent seasons, but never advanced beyond bidistrict champion, it doesn't appear.

We didn't have one, but it was a better situation than this...

I played at Milton High School in the late 70's & early 80's. During that time I played on two 3A State championship teams and a regional championship team. We were Pretty good.

My high school team could have beaten the Noles Saturday night and they won one game last year (best I could tell).

Didn't you have Greg Allen on that team?

Didn’t win a game junior or senior year. We were a class 1A school (which was the small school classification at the time), but two other school districts approached our school board about combining football teams because neither had enough kids out to field teams. It was approved, and our classification was upped to 3A. One school ended up sending over 4 or 5 kids, the other school sent 1, who quit almost immediately. I believe our entire varsity team ended up having less than 25 kids on it, many who were supposed to play JV instead. Almost everyone that started for us played both offense and defense and our biggest lineman was under 220. Back then, a game would be called if you were down by 50 at the half. We only played the second half in 3 games my junior year. It was brutal.

We were pretty good and went to state finals 2 of the 3 years I was there; in what was the largest classification at the time. It helps when your QB goes on to play in the NFL and becomes the HC at Alabama. We also had 2 other guys go onto play in the NFL.
We lost both times in the state finals, one time to Emmitt Smith's team.

Played 2 years varsity at Orange Park, FL, we were OK, I think we were average probably won 50-75% of our games each year. My last year of JV the Varsity went to the first round of the playoffs and lost. When I was a senior, two of my good friends went to FSU on scholarship. That's was pretty cool.

Meanwhile I went to a small Div III school, The Newport News Apprentice School and played for Norm Snead for a year. Get this, I actually got paid to go to this school and play ball, I was a shipbuilder, but I still got paid.

I don't remember the last 2 years. I didn't go to many games, usually had to work on Friday nights. It builds character my folks said.

First 2 were pretty good when Vanover was there.

Rutherford was awful before and while I was there but then became a playoff-caliber team for a few years beginning the year after I left only after hiring a quality coach. They were spanked by cross-town rivals Mosley 41-0 last night though.

My first high school played for the 7A state championship. My second high school was solid but couldn’t compete with the powerhouses.
