Need to define work. As you move higher up your value isn't generally in pushing out paper or widgets, you're being paid for leadership, management abilities, strategic decision making, etc.
Someone on the production line or in customer service is doing a hell of a lot more hands on work than the average exec, but most times is not working in the evenings, skipping vacations, waking up at night worrying about the numbers as the quarter is ending.
