She left a note after selling her company for $2.4B. More proof money isn't everything.

Gone but not forgotten.

Who is Kate Spade and why should we know her?

Very successful fashion designer who created the Kate Spade brand. They did purses in all of that fun stuff. I believe she sold the company a while ago and made a boat load of money.

The Spades' interview on NPR's How I Built This was very interesting. Unfortunate she wasn't able to get the help she needed.

I knew of Kate Spade due to wife but didn't realize she was related to David Spade until I read the article. Odd combination to come out of one family but both very successful.

Edit: I guess she is his sister-in-law. I had read the article wrong.

I would assume in the instant of committing suicide that whatever fears, doubts, ailments, etc. are affecting the person are so strong as the thought of even family isn't strong enough to stop them from the act.

I have a 6 year old boy and I can't imagine leaving him. Then again, I'm not in a mental state of someone who feels suicide is the answer to a problem.

Its not just sad, but I think for those that struggle with it, it is very hard to understand. I cant. I cant envision being in a mindset that says that is thing to do. But I know that those that struggle with it really do feel that way. Wish there was a way to change that mindset.

I conceptually understand people's perspective that it is a selfish act given that this person had a child. But, when you have a mental illness, you don't always think things through from a rational perspective. Hell, people without a mental illness don't. In my family's case, we've had a suicide and an attempted suicide. In both cases, the family member's depression was such that they could not see all they had going for them and decided that taking their own lives was the only way out of their particular situations. Just the other day I thought that my cousin, who killed himself when he was 15, would have been 50 this year.

Can't imagine doing that knowing you are leaving behind a teenager.
That is the thing about somebody who is truly clinically depressed. They see themselves more as a burden to their family and in that moment feel their family would be better off without them around. Mental illness is a terrible thing.

You mean don't struggle with it, right?

You'd be surprised, or maybe not, how powerful the thoughts become. I have a limited experience with this and can say that the thought of suicide as a way out, whether it's a situation or pain or guilt, etc, is so strong, so powerful, that it overwhelms you and consumes your every thought. And this isn't just spur of the moment either. It's something that often goes on for days or weeks or even months on end. The thoughts literally drive you mad until you can't take them anymore. The only real way to stop it is to commit yourself which many people never do because of the shame and the fear that will be the rest of their life - which is to either live 'mad', be labeled as a crazy person if you do get well or just thinking what you may become if you don't die. It's so tragic...

Read that the husband was home at the time, but housekeeper found her. Scarf tied to doorknob. How does no one hear this going on?

Horrible. When I read the headline, not knowing anything about fashion, I just assumed she was an old woman and was checking out a little early, maybe was sick. But 55 with a teenage daughter, so horrible and sad.

Who is Kate Spade and why should we know her?
WHAT???
My daughter and I were going through all our Kate Spade stuff today wondering if it would become more valuable?!
Seriously she designed great accessories and even a few pieces of clothing. So very, very sad.

Article I just ran across talking about her history of mental illness. Her family is saying it wasn't unexpected. After reading this (I had no idea but am not surprised) I can't believe they didn't Baker Act her...

Tough to get the Florida authorities the proper jurisdiction up there.
Oh, is baker act just a Florida thing? Figured it was nation wide or there was something similar in every state...

The actual name of the Baker act is the Florida Mental Health Act, and family members can’t initiate an involuntary hospitalization under the act. They can contact law enforcement or health professionals to express concern, and those professionals can initiate an involuntary hospitalization that can extend up to 72 hours, if the person meets the specified criteria. The moment that person no longer meets the specified criteria, they must be released.

That was an incredibly sad read.

I so wish there was a way to help folks realize this isn't the way.
