Does anyone have any experience with these things?

Just a gimmick, or does it do something that better than a conventional grill can do it?

I like the look of it, but obviously the convenience factor of a gas grill is missing. It could be a great way to spend an evening outside.
The price is OK for something that gets a lot of use, not so good for the ocaisional use.

I do not have experience with or knowledge of it. But it's an interesting concept that is in high demand. Their website indicates they are running 4 to 6 weeks on back orders. So, they must be doing something right.

I appreciate the versatility and portability but it wouldn't fit my lifestyle. I do all of my cooking on my pool deck. I can't think of a situation where I would pack it up and bring with me and I doubt it would be allowed at tailgates on campus due to the open fire.

Viewing the product site on my phone might be part of the problem for me but it doesn't appear to be durable based on some of that components and the accessories. Some of the marketing materials also make me think it's challenging to maintain a consistent temp. I would also be concerned with the amount of cook surface.

In the spirit of transparency, I have a bias since I recently purchased the Big Joe. I agree with Bill in that it looks cool but not cool enough at that price. If I had to wager, their target demographic is 24 - 40 year old males from Texas. It would be functional for hunters but I wouldn't set it up in my backyard.

It's definitely cool in some ways, but it strikes me as one of those things that is good at a lot of things, but maybe not the best way to do anything? It seems like it would be a good thing to have if you had a rustic cabin or a fishing camp or something like that to have more flexibility.

In essence, it seems to be something that replicates and updates and streamlines campfire cooking. If you're used to cooking over a campfire, this seems like a way to sort of replicate that and make it way more flexible and manageable, and I respect that. But I've been grilling out multiple times a week for 20+ years, and I've never ever cooked over a campfire.

The giveaway is this:

This is such a simpler and more practical concept than trying to control the one aspect of grilling that’s completely uncontrollable – fire.

Anybody that grills or smokes knows this is patently false...people are constantly controlling fire in their cooking to the point they hold it at 225 degrees for 7 hours or something. And it can be done in a <$200 grill. It's just that THIS grill doesn't have the mechanisms to control fire.

However, that is much more true about a campfire, where you don't have control over the oxygen.

It just doesn't seem that it would be the best possible option as a backyard grill, but seems like it would have a lot of appeal as a camping grill or portable grill. I can't find a square inches, but it also doesn't look like all that large a cooking surface, although I suppose having multiple surfaces mitigates that somewhat.

I'm sure awesome food can be made on it though.
 
Seems to me that getting a Santa Maria style bbq or attachment for the Weber kettle would be more functional because it is easier to move the grates up and down.

All I have done is look at pictures, but isn't this the same as having a grill grate over a fire pit?
I have one that’s affixed to a steel rod. Drive the rod into the ground next to the fire, put the grill attachment on, and away you go. It can be raised and lowered, and spun out of the way. Was cheap, get two and you’re still hundreds of dollars left than this thing. Much more portable than this.

That said, this does look very cool and I want one. ;)

The Mountain Man Grill is the one you described. Made out of decent steel 1/4" plate
Got one at hunting lease.
