LATE REPORT
We got a chance to speak with DB Marquez White, DB Javien Elliott, DL Nile Lawrence-Stample and WR Kermit Whitfield. Here are a few of the highlights:
There's been a lot of activity in the secondary due to injuries and White said it has drilled the "next man up" mentality into several players' minds. He said there have been pretty promising moments from freshmen defensive backs Tarvarus McFadden and Marcus Lewis. White said Lewis and McFadden started to show their ability during the summer and as the season continues, they're looking more comfortable.
After the Louisville game, Elliott said there were quite a few voice messages, texts and emails on his phone wishing him congratulations. Elliott said when he played at Panama City Rutherford, he was really known more for being a running back or a receiver. He started at safety when he was a senior yet really viewed himself as an offensive player. He was attending junior college when his father told him something "didn't sit right" with him not playing football. After attending a junior college back home and then Tallahassee Community College, he transferred to FSU.
Lawrence-Stample was quizzed about the defense's success against the run this season. He didn't really have a true answer but he did say there were factors that helped. One of them being the depth across the defensive line.

EARLY REPORT
Florida State's open portion during Monday practice had a bit of a different feel to it. The baseball team was playing an exhibition game and between innings, fans were given a chance to see what was new. FSU women's soccer coach Mark Krikorian was also at practice. FSU's color scheme was a bit of a surprise at first. Usually, the offense wears white and the defense wears garnet for road games. Because Georgia Tech wears white at home, the offense wore garnet and the defense in white as if it were a home game. Now, for the news:
RB Dalvin Cook was at practice but not in pads. FSU coach Jimbo Fisher rested Cook a few days prior to the team's 41-21 win over Louisville. Cook did suffer a hamstring ailment toward the end of the second quarter on Saturday. Fisher said during his press conference that the team's GPS technology allows them to monitor Cook in a way that allows for advanced planning, if needed.
LB Terrance Smith was also at practice but not in pads. Fisher said he was day-to-day while recovering from an ankle injury. DB Nate Andrews did participate in practice and during stretches appeared to have no problem moving around in a knee brace that practically covered his left leg. TE Jeremy Kerr was also held out. WR Auden Tate didn't take part in stretching but he was dressed in pads.
The running backs were doing a mix of drills while running out of certain formations. Fullbacks were working on pass protection while the running backs were concentrated on hitting a specific hole. The backs also ran out of FSU's "Split Nole" formation, which is two running backs separated by the quarterback. FB Freddie Stevenson would work on pass protection with either Johnathan Vickers or Jacques Patrick on either side.
FSU offensive line coach Rick Trickett was anything but flexible. No member of the line was above criticism even OL Roderick Johnson, who has been the line's most consistent member both during the open portion of practice and at games. Trickett was adamant about telling the line what they needed to worry about and what to jettison. He was instructing the line on what to do on a double team. He continually told whoever was at right guard to worry more about helping the center before jumping in to block a linebacker.
Because we spoke with Fisher during his press conference, we will only get players today. They're slated to come around 6 p.m.
