LATE REPORT
Warchant TV: Jimbo Fisher post-practice
Biggest note from our session with Jimbo Fisher was Fisher saying Corey Martinez remains the team's starting center. Fisher said Ryan Hoefeld was getting first team reps for simply for rotation purposes. Fisher chuckled, "Do you think we would start someone else after he played a good game."
DT Keith Bryant sat out of today's practice. Fisher said he twisted his knee against Texas State. He continued by saying Fisher should be fine and return at some point.
Fisher said this week does not feel like short week despite the 11:30 a.m. start against USF. Next week will be a short week with the Seminoles traveling to Boston College for a Friday game. Fisher said he'll continue his post-game routine of grading the offense, defense and special teams before planning ahead. Depending upon the week, he said, there are times he may start preparing for an upcoming opponents a few days in advance.
DT Giorgio Newberry and Demarcus Christmas were both described as "specialists" because of what they can do on the interior pass rush. Fisher waxed about how football has turned into a game where specialists are needed. He said, "That's the game. Game is a specialist's game. Like you do with receivers, nickelbacks and dimebacks." He continued by saying Christmas and Newberry have more length and burst, allowing them to burst through an opposing offensive line.
We'll be getting a few players here in a bit. Like always, make sure to check out the Warchant Wrap along with the additional content we'll have on the site.
EARLY REPORT
Good afternoon everyone. USF comes to town in four days and practice was serious and there some light moments. Nothing were coaches were being aggressive but there was almost a universal understanding there was no time to waste. Because of the 11:30 a.m. start, some have considered this a "short week" and the approach today was pretty business like. Now for the news:
DB Jalen Ramsey had a few returns with the kickoff unit and he looked pretty fluid right off the jump. Ramsey appears to be getting more comfortable in that role as if he's done it for a while. As we've discussed on the site this week, FSU was in the lower tier last season on kickoff returns. Ramsey and Kermit Whitfield helped the Seminoles average more than 42 yards per return. Also, Jimbo Fisher was pretty adamant about keeping players responsible when it comes to their blocking assignments on the return team.
WR Nyqwan Murray is still practicing with a hard cast on his left hand but was flashy in drills. FSU warms up its receivers by throwing lobs and then bullet passes. Murray, on two lob passes, cradled the football with one hand drawing a few reactions from people. Strength and conditioning coach Vic Viloria joked, "He's saying he's better with one hand then you guys are with two." Viloria said that as Murray was walking back to the line. Murray, himself, was pretty cool about it. But on bullet passes, one could see where the cast made it challenging to catch passes.
The offensive line had a different look at center. Ryan Hoefeld was taking first team snaps at center. Joining him was Roderick Johnson, Kareem Are, Wilson Bell and Brock Ruble. Abdul Bello and Cole Minshew each wore their jersey and helmets but no pads.
NFL teams at practice were the Cardinals, Colts, Lions and Patriots.
Here's your Tweet of the Day from practice:
We've been told Coach Fisher will meet with us at 6 p.m.
Until then. Bye for now.
