Let's talk merging

Simply put we should do away with lanes.

This. Roundabouts are sometimes used as a less intrusive (compared to a stop sign or speed bumps) traffic calming tool.

Another reason that roundabouts might appear to be underdesigned is right-of-way limitation. When retrofitting an existing four-way intersection, the ideal roundabout diameter might require taking someone's lawn or a parking lot or building.
I'm all for it as long as they leave Big Ben and Parliament in place.

The only problem I have is when people speed up the left lane to get ahead of a bunch of cars in the right lane especially when they are backed up in traffic. This did occur west bound on 9 mile in pensacola going out to the Navy Federal CU office buildings that they are finally widening to accommodate thousands of employees. I had to drive this route to drop my kid off at a school beyond the buildings.

People would be backed up for 50-70 cars in the right lane stopped and about 50 yds from the light the lanes would merge. there was another light about 3/4 mile from that light right before the interstate. Ideally cars in left lane were turning on interstate and cars in right lane were in line to get through that second light, but it was horribly backed up. Cars would get in left lane, go all the way to the end of the merge and invariable someone would let them in. Would piss me off and I would block them every time. They have since fixed the second light and it isn't as bad as it was.

Still get mad at any merge opportunity that I see cars speeding in the left lane and dart in between me and the car in front of me with <15 feet of room and I have been flipped off numerous times in this situation. Equal speed traffic zipper merge I have no problem with.
