Hypothetically speaking, let's say you're found guilty of a crime that results in you being locked away in prison for the rest of your life. The judge gives you two options; you can live the rest of your life in prison or you can be sent to Afghanistan, where you can't leave, with (1) duffel bag full of supplies of your choice to survive.

Which option are going with?

Well this is and uplifting topic lol. Is the taliban still in charge ? I could herd some goats and grow some popies if I get to keep my head.

Afghanistan. 100%.

What if it was a minimum security place like they have at Eglin, with tennis courts and the opportunity to attend classes at the local college?

They probably don't organize sky diving, or spear fishing excursions, but they would have air conditioning.

no doubt, Afghanistan. Now if you said prison or some parts of the Amazon, I might consider prison.

No brainer for me. Astan and I will assume the bag can have whatever I want ; which makes the decision real easy. I would live like a king in A-stan and within a year I would own a region say county size; then send for my family.

Been to Afghanistan... It sucks... but I could survive (might have to convert for long term safety lol)

I certainly don't have the experience of Ranger or some others, but I'd take my chances with the unknown of Afghanistan over the certainty of life in prison. If I stock my "whatever" bag smartly, I might have an outside shot.

I'm claustrophobic. Besides, in a 'stan I can become a chieftain and lead my nation of warriors in an plan of retribution - kinda like Kahn did against Kirk and the Federation.

Different outcome, but you get the idea.

No grape jelly, apparently just plenty of boys, goats, etc.

The type of prison would be key. The prospect of going slowly insane from 23hr isolation in a federal supermax, or maybe a maximum security state facility would be gangland hell. But the dudes that I took some summer classes with one year while home didn't seem to have it too bad at the minimum security facility on Elgin AFB.

Stick to white collar crime, kids...

What's going in a duffel bag that would assist you in owning a region and living like a king?

Thought the thread title said Australia for a sec...

Would anyone really pick prison? I would probably not make it long in A'Stan, but at least when I went out........it would be on my own terms.

In this hypothetical, I want to be Ranger's accomplice. I'd happily go to Astan with him and just be in his regime. Deputy Minister of...

Well of the top of my head the obvious is protein shakes, my ice packs and of course my cooler.

Now for my overall plan a couple of AK's, 5000 rounds of ammo, a couple of GPS radios, my work cell phone, water purifier, 100-200k in cash small and large bills, my full kit, clothes would be easy and include a man dress, eo-tech, tablet, cradle point and maybe a few other things. I would adjust based on duffle bag size.

For clarification - would money fit into the category of "supplies"? Also, how big of a duffel bag we talking? If we are talking standard footlocker size, I'll take the Stan along with $1.5M (give or take) in 100's and hit the ground running. If this is not an option, I'll still go back and make it work somehow. In prison, there are no options and I could never live like that. Also, contrary to popular belief, Muslims are for peace and against violence. Never had a bad experience with any locals there or when I went to Pakistan (Jacobabad, which was worse that Afghanistan IMO)

Um, there are some significant groups in Afghanistan that are certainly not peaceful / non-violent that identify as Muslim and tout Islam as justification for their atrocities. It's the reason we're there and why we'll be there for the foreseeable future. I am of course not saying all, or even a significant percentage of Muslims share that ideology.

Meh, its a function of almost all religions having a group zealots. All seem to have a group that feels either you are with us or die. When you have a billion followers, 1 million extremists seems like a lot even at .1%. Seems like a lot by head count but small by percentage.

You are right. I should have specified that my opinion was based on my experience only.

For purposes of this conversation, is stoning an adulteress violence, or justice?

Again - I should have clarified that my opinion was based on my personal experiences over there, rather than make it a general assessment.

Would anyone like to get back on topic? :)

I'd rather have three meals a day, access to American tv, lift weights and visits from my family over that awful part of the world.

It's all carbs in the pen, homey.....you can't paleo.....and no crossfit.

Is there really any difference? They both could be defined as hell, end of the line, or something similar. I couldn't imagine having to do either.

The original premise of JHNole's post wasn't whether an everyday functioning member of society would pick A-stan or prison. It was "criminals and nut jobs". See his post below. My counter was many of those referenced career criminals and gang bangers acclimate well to life in prison and would prefer that to Afghanistan.
Always fascinated by criminals and nut jobs who go on the lamb, and the efforts made to find them. I say empty the prisons, dump them all in Afghanistan, and see what they can do. Some of them are pretty clever and resourceful. If it doesn't work out as hoped for, they went out doing something constructive. And most of them would gladly accept the challenge instead of rotting in prison.
