Watched the first episode last weekend. Was hugely disappointed. Just too much. Felt the dad and son were not great actors. Just felt contrived, all of it.

But I gave it another shot this weekend and wow has it really found itself. 6 of 10 episodes in and I am enjoying it a lot. I think the first episode was just weird and too busy, and most important hasd no Dr. Smith. Parker Posey as Dr Smith absolutely makes entire thing work. She is awesome.

To me, the first episode was confusing because they crashed right at the beginning without the benefit of the events leading up to the crash.

And it was strange that Major West wasn’t part of the crew initially.

But they hit a home run with the new robot!

I’m going to keep watching.

The show has a bit too much deviation from the original for me...... and I can't stand the new Dr. Smith. The old Dr. Smith was a conniving imbecile, the new one is just an evil liar.

I had no connection to the old tv show as it was on way before I was even a thought and the local tampa channels didn’t carry it as a rerun unlike shows like Gilligan’s Island, Bewitched, Star Trek, Twilight Zone, etc... But I did watch the 90s movie and thought it was ok (actually better than ok excluding the cartoon space monkey parts).

This reboot though, I’ve loved so far. I’m 6 episodes in as well and so far so good. I love all of the changes. Making the Robinsons more of a “modern” semibroken family, robot as alien tech rather than a human tool, a conniving, backstabbing female Dr Smith instead of a mincing extravagantly gay pedophile with motives that really make no sense, etc...

Just finished all 10 episodes and it definitely grows on you as it progresses.
I grew up with the original, but like the Battlestar Galactica reboot, the loose ties do work pretty well.
Pretty good cliffhanger leaves you wanting to see season 2 as it should!

So I remember really, really loving the reruns of Lost in Space as a kid, but frankly don't remember much of it at all, so I'm not too concerned about faithfulness.

I can't say I like the new one particularly, but I have found it as great "background programming" when I'm on my phone or the computer, or otherwise just not wanting to engage in something super intently.

I think it's pretty cheesy and I think the family dynamics thing is interesting but they're hitting it way too hard.

But it's extremely not subtle, everything is right there for you, so it's a good show to watch with half your mind, and it looks good. I do think the new Dr. Smith is the most interesting part of the show, for sure.

what is Dr Smith's motivation? The whole anarchy thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense without a real backstory beyond "I can't go back."

Her main motivation at least through the six episodes I’ve seen is that she doesn’t want the survivors hooking up with the Resolute. Because the captain (who she knows is alive) basically said she would be executed or imprisoned for life for the murder of the guy she threw out the airlock. She wouldn’t want to live on an alien planet without others to interact and rely upon, so she couldn’t just “escape”. She needs to make sure they never leave the planet. Which makes her a perfect “neutral evil” foil, as she doesn’t want to kill people per se, but she doesn’t want them escaping to the Resolute either.

I'm only like two and a half episodes in, but yeah I thought that was pretty clear.

It gets much better around episode 4. I'm up to 8 now and I've really liked it. But yes, you do grow to hate Dr. Smith in this one rather than just be annoyed by the more comical mistakes of the Dr. from the original series.

I was thinking about it today, why this show didn't really elevate to "good" with me, why I didn't like it more. I think it's because they didn't really give any reason to care about the characters. We know that there's tension between husband and wife, and somewhat the kids too, but it's pretty superficial...I'm not really understanding why I should really care, either because they're special, or interesting, or relateable, etc.

That's not really a problem, that's a fine choice, you can just drop some people into a situation and see what happens...that's a totally valid approach. It just doesn't so much work for me personally with TV. Funny enough, it doesn't frequently bother me with movies, but for TV I need to care what happens next, and it's hard to do that without a reason to start caring about the characters more. The main protagonist family is just not very fleshed out right now through a few episodes.

Interested to see if that develops for me in future episodes.

I've got a question, which I feel stupid asking after ridiculing the "Why doesn't Dr. Smith want to get rescued?" question.

The one daughter, the doctor, appears to be a different ethnicity than the rest of the family. Did they explain anything around that, or is that something that nobody else is seeing?

@Nole Lou- nothing has been introduced to explain why Judy is different then all other Robinsons.

Thanks. Maybe it's just ethnicity-blind casting which is cool with me.

I also find the ages confusing, as the two daughters appear pretty much the same age. But one's a doctor and one seems like a high school sophomore, so the whole dynamic threw me off a little.

Just get used to TV being pretty unsubtle about things and spelling everything out.

The half sisters are close in age one a couple of years different (so maybe 17 & 19 or 16 & 18) but they made it clear the....more melanin rich one..is from a different baby daddy. Remember the two sisters (along with the mother) are supposed to be elite level geniuses, it was Will who wasn’t smart enough to get selected for the trip. So it wouldn’t be too surprising the older sister is very young for a physician. Plus as part of the colonisation plan, you would want a lot of younger elite brained professionals.

What'll be interesting is how will the producers deal with the romance between Don and Judy as she looks much much much younger then he does.

Because the captain of the ship pretty much told her he was going to kill her. If she goes back she's dead.

As for the daughter who is different. There was one scene where one of the characters asks her about it and she says her Dad came along after she was born. So she's got a different daddy.

I don’t know that Will wasn’t smart enough. He froze under pressure during the tests.

Just finished the season 1. Like everyone stated it was a bit slow and disjointed to begin but filled in info with flashbacks as the season went on. We (the family) really enjoyed it and the premise. Yes Dr chick is so evil and still alive. She would have been out an airlock herself much sooner. Was really surprised by the ending ... These 12 ish episode series are killing me having to wait a year for the next installment..

I had norovirus about a month ago and whatched the whole season when I was down for the count. I really dug it. Looking forward to more episodes. I thought it was very well done and I’m not a big sci-fi fan.

The Expanse season 2 and 3 are some of the best Sci Fi in 20 years. (Season 1 was just OK to me)

Lost in Space gets better as it goes but it's just for a rainy day.

I really need to add the Expanse to my watchlist. I've heard really good things.

You must of missed the scene about the pool guy and the bottle of Cavasia?

It’s great. Obviously it’s missing the bewbs that GOT has, but when I’m listing my favorite shows currently on, The Expanse is top 4 along with GOT, Fargo and the Americans. I enjoy Westworld, Altered Carbon, Black Mirror, Star Trek Discovery, Man in High Castle, Stranger Things, Electric Dreams, and Lost in Space, but the Expanse is the best sci-fi on tv at the moment.
