Defending tournament champion Lottie Woad carded eight birdies, shot a 65 in the first round, and is in second place heading into the second round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur at the Champions Retreat. Woad totaled four birdies on both her front and back nines and is just two strokes behind the overall leader, Megha Ganne, who carded 9 under par score of 63 – the lowest single-round score in ANWA history.

Florida State All-American Mirabel Ting is in a tie for 61st place as she shot a 4 over par 76. She played well on her front nine and was 1 under par when she made the turn.

“I was really looking to get off to a good start today and I started off with two birdies,” Woad said to the Golf Channel in a post-round interview. “I settled in nicely. It helps that there is such a good field this week. Even though I am world No. 1, anybody can beat you. I’m still trying to play really good golf – which I have to do to win. I’m just focused on that.”

As she works to become the first two-time and first repeat winner in the history of the event, Woad settled in quickly and began playing stellar golf from the start of the first round.

Woad birdied three of her first four and four of her first eight holes. She was three strokes under par at the turn and played very clean golf on her back nine. She birdied holes No. 10, 13, 15, and 18 and finished with her masterpiece of 65.

Her score of 65 allowed her to card at least one score in the 60’s in each of her first three appearances in the ANW. She totaled scores of 77-69-72 for a 2-over-par score of 218 and a 13th-place finish in 2023. Woad earned scores of 68-71-69 for an 8-under-par total of 208 in winning the ANWA in 2024.

“I knew it (the leaderboard) was going to be pretty packed,” said Woad during her post-round interview with the assembled media. “I’m just trying to stick to my own game, stick to the plan, and not really change too much.”

A total of 29 golfers shot under par scores during the first round. Woad is one of five golfers who shot 5 under par or better with Woad and three golfers within four shots of the lead.

Woad averages 70.14 strokes in seven career ANWA rounds and is 18 strokes under par in her most recent six ANWA rounds. She has finished at or under par in each of her last six ANWA rounds.

Woad was asked if her familiarity with the course helped her in the first round.

“It definitely helps,” said Woad. “In order to score well here, you have to hit the fairways and have good tee shots. Knowing those lines beforehand is definitely helpful.”

Woad begins play in the second and final qualifying round at 8:23 a.m. on Thursday. She is playing with Jasmine Koo and Louise Rydqvist. Ting begins play at 8:00 in the second group of the day. She will play with Katie Li and Havanna Torstensson.
