Marking Appointments as "Private" in Outlook

When you mark an appointment as "private" in Outlook, what can be seen by those that have managerial privileges?

At my company, I'm part of a 3-person team. It's just me, my colleague (who doesn't have managerial privileges), and my director, who does. My director is great and not the nosy type anyway, but occasionally I put something personal on my Outlook calendar, that I'd just as soon now show up in his view...like "hemorrhoid treatment today" or "3rd anniversary of catching herpes"...you know, the usual sort of stuff.

When you hover over the "Private" icon, it says, "Mark this item as private so that other people cannot see the details of it." Does that mean they can see the title of the appointment, but not the body of the message, aka the "details" as the icon implies? Or does everything show up as "Private" in their view?

Change your default settings. He probably didn't have his set to private by default so it was sharing more detail than he should have.

Shouldn't have anything to do with managerial status.

I'm not sure I understand your response...or perhaps you didn't understand my question.

  • We share calendars (we have to - I don't have the option/aka not allowed not to)
  • B/c I report to him, I can only see when he is "busy." I can't see the content of his appointments that he has blocked out. So if he's busy from 1-2, I see "Busy". If I click into an individual appointment, I can't see anything more than that.

What I'm wondering is, b/c I report to him, and he can see the content of my individual appointments (by default...at least I assume he can), if I mark a particular appointment as private (which is an option), can he see anything specific about that appointment (like the title, for instance) or does the whole thing just show up as "Busy"?

Being a manager shouldn't change anything, unless your office has some kind of odd settings. It should depend on how you setup your privacy settings. You can allow others that you've shared your calendar with to see varying levels of detail.

The link I posted shows the varying levels of details you are allowing others to see for your calendar events. Ranges from just blocks of time that say "private" to "busy" to titles of events, to full details.

I would suggest you check your calendar default settings.

Let me get this straight...you're concerned about your supervisor seeing your privates?

Unless your sup is a network admin, I don't think he has any special privileges (and even then I don't think they can see anything).
