I was watching Alien Covenant for the second time and was reminded how horrible a movie it was. Based on previews, it looked promising. Horribly wrong, movie wasn't really very entertaining at all.

On the flip side, I recall how much i hated the trailer for the Fifth Element when it was first showing in theaters. When I finally watched it, it was only because my cousin rented it and was watching it. Ended up being one of my favorite Sci fi movies, even if it is cheesy.

Got any where you were fooled by the trailer into thinking a movie was going to be good or bad?

Red Sparrow - Didn't think I would like it, but I had some time to kill between the Finnish Wife Carrying competition and a crawdad cookout/housewarming party. I really liked it.

Jack Reacher 2 - Thought I would like it, but almost walked out 45 minutes in.

For me both are Star Wars movies.

Now I didn’t see the trailer before seeing the movie as I was barely 1.5 when it came out, but the first Star Wars trailer is absolute hot garbage. Just absolutely dreadful. If you haven’t seen it, you need to see how it absolutely ruins a great movie.

The flipside, so a great trailer to a terrible movie, is Phantom Menace. I can’t remember being more terribly disappointed in a movie than this one.

I'm not sure I can think of a movie where the actual film greatly exceeded the trailer, but I can think of many (probably 75-80%) where the trailer was much better than the movie.

after hearing so many negative things about Avatar, I thought I would hate it, but I actually enjoyed it mainly due to the visuals.

Thor Ragnarock. That trailer looked ridiculous but they movie was funny and entertaining.

Yeah, that one was better than it looked in previews.

Watched Valerian-and-the-City-of-a-Thousand-Planets last night and that was the opposite of the Fifth Element in a lot of ways. Such a pity.

Oh and it could have been really good. They just missed

Twister's trailer was better than the movie

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind was a better movie than trailer

As far as the 1st Star Wars trailer back in 1977 I think...I was 14 when I 1st saw it...I completely geeked out on it I was so excited. The Tie Fighters and their sound...just so beyond cool to me I 'll never forget it.

Less was definitely more with this commercial. But when I first watched it as a kid I was like WTH (which is exactly the hook they were attempting)

I would have to add Forest Gump. I think initial great reviews saved the movie from the trailer.

I try not to watch the trailers anymore. Quite often they are a 2 minute synopsis of the whole film. 'Well.....I guess that the whole plot then......don't have to pay to see that film."

A lot of Tom Cruise movies I thought would be terrible because....it was Tom Cruise.

But they actually ended up being great.

He got a bad rap after jumping up and down on the talk show couch...when he was married to the girl....and the sciencetology thing.

But his movies are actually good imo.

Not a trailer, but watched Veronica on Netflix. It was being hyped as the scariest movie on Netflix by the twitter and the facebook. It was ok. Some scary parts, but not the hype.

I watched The Meyerwitz Chronicles on Netflix recently. Expected to hate it, because I generally hate the "upper middle class white urbanites in existential crisis" genre. It's hard for me to think of any others in that area I like. I only really watched it because I caught a glowing review online, and Adam Sandler in dramatic roles is usually somewhat interesting to me.

I thought it was really exceptional. I'd have to think about it, but I'm not sure off hand if it wasn't my favorite movie of 2017.

Goes back years, but I'd also say Saw. Caught it one night on HBO or something, and it couldn't have been further from something I would ever watch in my mind, and ended up thinking it was pretty good. I wouldn't say I loved it, but was pretty surprised that I liked it as much as I did. Certainly not enough to keep up with the series or anything.

I liked the original and bend on thriller gore genre, but once the production budget went up, the quality went WAY down.

Saw Jumangi this week, hated the trailer, liked the movie.
Also saw Annihilation basicially the opposite.,

I completely forgot to mention Coco. I had zero interest in seeing a movie about day of the dead with all those skeletons running around. Decided to stream it one Sunday afternoon on the fire stick and wound up liking it an awful lot. Allergies are terrible this time of year....

Not that I was expecting to like it, but Downsizing was nothing like the light hearted comedy that it portrayed in the trailers. Very odd movie, I didn't enjoy it at all. Although I did feel Jason Bateman probably would have made it more entertaining than Matt Damon.

Edge of Tomorrow, yeah that's a good example of one. I thought trailer looked awful, turned out to love the movie. Very good sci-fi movie.

Skipped it for years for this reason, and Tom Cruise, but ended up loving it. I've watched it several times since.

GOAL: Mediocre trailer....really enjoyed the movie

Watched it on my flight tonight, damn it that movie made me tear up a few times. While my family history is Mexican, we never did the day of the dead traditions, but there were a lot of little things in there that took me back. Loves the songs, could see my sons in the main little boy and it tugged at my heart strings.

That reminded me of one that I was totally disappointed in. The Good Dinosaur. Decent enough movie, but trailer was really misleading. The movie is also not really great for young kids. Let my son see it when he was 2 1/2, as he loves dinosaurs. He has all the toys from the movie, but it's just not a great movie for really young kids. The toys were great, the movie itself was very disappointing.
