Mr. President

Yes and no. We lost a lot of people, but usually it's the loss of one key member that changes the tone and things are never the same. Larry was that one.
Truth. I got in at the tail end of Larry’s influence and never truly felt it. RIP. When a crew loses the leader/ direction/ major influence it often disconnects.

Really nice guy. I didn't know him as well as some of you did but he would always come over to our multi-page fraterno american threads and joke around with us. That was pretty cool.

In all of the blog comment and message board personas I have got to "know" , Larry stands out on the top as the most genuine, calm, and sage internet presence I have seen. I can only wonder what he was like for those who knew him in person.

I've got one Larry story that I'll never forget.

One day he calls me out of the blue, and he was really down. It was the anniversary of the first soldier that he ever lost under his care. Larry's Huey had come in hot on a mess of injured and he had one young soldier who never had a chance. Larry tried, but in vain he just held the young soldier's hand until he passed quietly, while it chaos around them. Then Larry tells me in a bit of a whisper, that he can no longer remember the soldier's name, if he ever knew it. It was really bothering him. The only thing that I had was that told him to not worry, because the young man knew HIS name, and he'd see him again. Not sure if that helped Larry at all, but he said that it did, and after some small talk, we signed off.

That's Larry, and I really do miss that man.

I always felt bad about how Larry seemed to always lend a sympathetic ear to a certain imposter, and passed well before the BS was exposed. However, I have a feeling Larry would've forgiven him pretty quickly. I never met the guy in person but he always struck me as someone that had seen the worst but continued to look for the best in people.

I never met him either and I didn't post as much then as I do now to have any back and forth with him. I do remember signing something for him at the FSU-Colorado tailgate in Jax.

The tone of the board now is a lot better than is was for a while, but at the same time, it's less interesting. I'd definitely opt for the more boring over the more toxic myself. I don't miss direct political discussions per se, but I do miss some great discussions that were religious/cultural in nature, but are now verboten because they are politics adjacent. I felt like a lot of people actually learned a lot about what made others tick, even if they weren't persuaded. I thought in general they were positive.

I think Larry's general influence (and some others) moderated the somewhat more controversial topics, in the sense of keeping it "we're all friends here" even when it was pretty passionate between say, Belem and Trad. Maybe it's more coincidental, but it at least "feels" that way to me, that after him, it just got more nasty in general, a lot of new troll posters, political and otherwise, and it lost some of that "UCLA may be a damned crazy liberal, but he's OUR damned crazy liberal" protectiveness that had prevented the place from becoming a flat out sewer.

I would love to have more cultural type topics and have campaigned for them behind the scenes. However, when we try, there are always a poster or two that makes a comment that turns the thread in a way that it spirals out of control. Depending on the topic, I can predict who it will be before they post. They are long time, regular posters who I guess just can't help themselves. Funny thing is that some of those I'm referring to will read this and acknowledge it's them while others are in complete denial.

Just because I've been banned a dozen times you act like I can't control myself.....

I can handle different political opinions but when that person revealed the mystery antagonist in Star Trek 2 without a spoiler tag during the opening weekend, the gloves had to come off.

Some vacations are worth the price of admission.

Was out in Dallas visiting friends and took a drive over to his place and spent a couple hours with him and his wife.

Made me look a lot shorter than I am..... ;)

But remember talking about some things going on at the time of a concerning nature and walked away at the end of that visit in a much more peaceful state of mind. He had a way of putting things into perspective. Will never forget that.

Spoke to him a few more times on the phone after that.... Really great man!! He is missed!!

Would you REALLY expect any different? If a thread "spirals out of control" then it always had the potential to - it is not the victim of creative sabotage. Just what is it you are trying to achieve?
