Just as the title asks, what groups did you not like when you first started hearing them, but over time began to enjoy?

For me, there are a couple from the same general time frame and musical style:
*The Talking Heads. Really didn't like them at all when they first hit the scene; looking back, they had some absolutely great music. Still don't like some of their stuff, but love a lot of it. And She Was has become one of my favorite songs.

*Elvis Costello and the Attractions; same as with the Talking Heads, I turned the channel pretty quickly when most of his stuff would come on the radio. Later on I started listening a little closer, and digging back into some of his early work - which is excellent.

Grunge acts. I was in college during its height ('90-'94), but I was sort of classic rock and looked at Nirvana/PJ/Soundgarden/Alice in Chains as noise. I remember seeing both AIC and Soundgarden open for older acts (VH/GnR) and not being into them at all. AIC got booed off the stage in Tally by the VH audience. Had club seats in Joe Robbie Stadium on NYE for GnR and Soundgarden opened. We spent almost the entire time at the bar. Sounded like they were playing the same song when we came back. Now I like all those bands and have several PJ/Soundgarden and Nirvana CDs. Go figure.

For me it’s not grunge as I was a big Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden fan (along with being into punk, ska, skunk and other music of the 90s) just not Pearl Jam and Nirvana. But as I’ve aged, I’ve come to really appreciate Nirvana (not so much Pearl Jam which is alright by me but I don’t like them nearly as much now as Nirvana or the ones I mentioned before).

The Pixies are definitely another band that’s grown on me over time as has They Might Be Giants and Bruno Mars.

*Smashing Pumpkins*

It's not that I ever thought they sucked, but I didn't care about them at all when they came out. Now I think of them as easily one of the best, if not the best, rock and roll bands of the last 25-30 years.

Cherub Rock = one of the greatest songs ever written.

Your taste has improved with age.

I did not like Tom Petty growing up, I just didn't get it. I grew up and realized how great he was

Still a Gator. And now that he’s played all the time at the Gator games I will soon learn to loathe him again.

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Too bizarre for my tastes, until I saw him live. Changed
my whole opinion after that. Dude was a musical genius.

First time I ever heard the "payoff" at 1:45 of this song, I nearly crapped my pants. One of the most triumphant pieces of music I've ever heard. And the bass guitar runs...my god!

I love Zappa!

justin bieber

lil douchebag made some decent music last couple years.

drake too. same comment as above.

I was at that Van Halen/ AIC concert. Layne Staley was not pleased he was getting booed. LOL

Nope. He cursed out the crowd, threw the mic down and stormed off the stage. Not sure if they were supposed to be done at that point, but they were done...

Pink Floyd
Fleetwood Mac. I still HATE most of their stuff, but Gypsy and Dreams are really good songs.

Back in the early/mid 80s I was at a concert somewhat like that, where the opening act was a terrible choice because the music didn’t mesh with the main event. The main act was Huey Lewis & the News, touring in support of their breakout album, Sports. For the southern swing of the tour, Huey chose as the opener a good friend of his who’d mostly been a studio musician and was making a name for himself. Problem was, the crowds that were there to see Huey were young, teenybopper, pop music fans. The opener was a hard core blues act. Guy had a decent amount of ability, you may have heard of him. A cat named Stevie Ray Vaughan. The kiddies didn’t appreciate his searing guitar licks, were booing, talking over him chanting “we want Huey.” Eventually one threw a wadded up paper cup & it hit SRV. He stopped, lectured them, told them his close friend Huey had asked him to be there tonight, and if you saw anyone throwing crap to do Huey and he a favor and punch the guy in the mouth. Played a couple more songs and was done.

That was the only time I got to see Stevie, but at least I did get to see him once.

Bob Dylan--I cannot say that I ever hated his music, but I did not really listen to or get him at all until my late 20s, and even then, it was initially through covers. It took another 10 years before I totally absorbed him. I had to go through all the other stuff I listened to in order to truly get and appreciate him. Now, he is by far my all time favorite musical artist.

...And he's still putting out great music through his seventies!

Mine would be Metallica. Primarily because I was in my tweens when i first heard Master and Lightning and did not like or get the songs that were not the standard 3:05. I loved One and the black album and then saw them live in 1992 and they kicked my ass and converted me - just in time to enjoy the black album and then nothing else they ever did. Still do love their first four albums though.

Off the top of my head, The Foo Fighters. I hated Nirvana, so Dave Grohl's affiliation with Nirvana instantly made me dislike TFF. They eventually wore on me when I heard one of their albums from top to finish and was really pleased with what I had just listened to.

Bob Seger was another one that I truly hated because that's all my father played and the song "Old Time Rock and Roll" was severely over played. Over time, other than OTR-n-R, I like 95% of his music.

Also, growing up in the 80's, and mostly listening to hard rock/metal/hair bands, I really didn't like soft rock or pop from the 80's, but if I hear a song from Bananarama or Billy Joel, or other popular soft rock artists or bands, I listen and enjoy the music.

Country Music in general. Still plenty I can't stand, but I have decent playlist of songs that I do like.
