my dad passed away in October and I moved back in with my mom to help her get my dad's stuff straight and to fix up her and my dad's home. Some of the stuff I couldn't do myself so my mother found a contractor who came in and did some things brought in some shady at best work crews and I never felt truly comfortable with them in my home but my mother wanted to get the worm taken care of and I relaxed a little.....there were some times when nobody could be here so we gave the contractor a key.....but I know on a couple of occasions a worker was given access as the contractor couldn't be here.....which was also questionable....my mom swore she had some pain medication from a surgery earlier in the year missing but she couldn't be positive.....

They finished their work about 2 months ago and today we got hit....my moms jewelry box which was hidden in the night gown drawer in her bedroom and my roku and PS3 from the den.....

No forcible entry and the front door which I know was locked this morning when I left was unlocked when I arrived home today whoever came in had to have a key.....thank goodness they didn't take my two English Bulldogs even though I'm sure they hid from them

The police came and took some information and I changed the locks tonight.....has anyone ever had this come up? What should I do? The police recommended we give them a few days to see if he pawns any of it. I'm beyond furious...what can I do? I'm sure none of the members of his work crew are being paid legally as they all look like cash workers and he's the only person other than my mom and i and my sister who have a key.....it's all way too fishy....and convenient.....

What are my legal options and what can I do to ruin this guys businesses reputation? I'm 100% sure it was one of his workers...any thoughts....

Hate it for you, but I think you recognize your mistake.

Unfortunately, this happens all of the time (even when you don't give them the key). Unscrupulous workers comb around your property, they see something they like, and, boom, suddenly there is an "incident" shortly after they finish their "work." Give law enforcement the story you gave above. It is likely they will ask the contractor for the names of all of his workers. They will run the names, and there is a decent chance they will find your man. Good luck.

They weren't supposed to be there alone.....contractor was always supposed to be with them which we found time and time again he was not....

Also found several food items missing last night.....two containers of Breyers ice cream, some fajita strips I planned to use for nachos tonight along with the other stuff....

Don't take ambien.....purchased the fajita steak Sunday at publix and planned to make it for dinner last night it was gone

some people I know from church had a similar occurance, except that they didn't give anyone the key. They suspect contractors who came over for quotes used that visit to case the place so they'd know which window to break and where the good stuff was to steal. It was a very surgical hit.

Any time I give someone a key for some reason or another (other than family/friends), I always change the locks afterwards. That's what contractors do in new houses.

My advice: Get in with the workers. By this I mean apply for a job with the company, get close to the scumbags, talk about you're previous run ins with the law and how you got fired from your previous job for a smash & grab at this little old lady's home that you were working on. Pay close attention to the reactions of the group and find your theif. Set up an elaborate burglary with them and then go Dexter Morgan on this individual...bust first find out what he did with the PS3 & fajitas. Make him talk!!

Highly recommend digital key pads for your doors. You can give a person a special code that only works for a specific time on a specific date--if you have a cleaning service. Can change the code quickly and easily. And your kids won't lose their keys and get locked out of the house.

LMFAO, did you really just post with a different account the day after you were banned? You're a special kind of stupid, aren't you?
No. I was posting with a different account while this one was banned. I guess when the boards got updated the bans got lifted.

Sucks man. I'm sorry to hear it. We were broken into back in March, so I feel your pain. Hopefully you guys have insurance and will be able to recoup some of your losses. I would definitely ask the police to look into the contractor to try and gather information on the workers. Definitely check around some of the local pawn shops to see if any of your stuff shows up.

Just get a security sign and a beware of dog sign. Even if you don't have either that is half the battle.

yeah, but if the people have already been in the house they'll know whether the alarm is actually used, would have been given a code to get in anyway and the'll know whether there really is a dog.

Back in the mid to late 80s, my husband and I went on vacation. We asked the daughter of a neighbor to come in to feed, water and walk our dog. We returned about 5 days later and found we had been robbed. The sheriff estimated it probably took the robbers two trucks to remove everything they stole. I think when we added everything up, they took nearly $80,000.00 worth of stuff. It was all very professional. The robbers even cleaned up after themselves, sweeping off the concrete apron in front of our garage (in order to insure law enforcement couldnt get tie tracks). It screamed, "Nothing personal. We just want your stuff." Never recovered anything. Strongly suspected the boyfriend of the neighbor's daughter was involved because whoever came in knew they had time to go through things.

Something similar happened to the widow neighbor behind me when she was having a pool installed. She wasn't staying at the house, and the crew had to know it. No one else in my neighborhood has ever been burglarized in the 27 years I've lived here.

No one ever does anything in my house if I'm not there.

I was there when they were working....I noticed one of the guys checking the place out. I just wanted to get them out of the house and quickly as possible. He also told my brother in law who was there during some of the work he had a pain killer addiction and had been in jail. My brother in law kept a close eye on him but apparently the contractor didn't. The police said we shouldn't contact the contractor to allow him time to pawn it as to not arouse suspicion. I think if the police had his name they could or we could contact local pawn shops to see if he had pawned anything. There is no doubt in my mind it was that one specific guy.

Except that it's likely they were already in the house and knew what was and wasn't there....

A couple of years ago I bought some tickets outside of the stadium. I made the guy who was selling them hold the ticket and his drivers license up under his chin and took a picture of it with my cell phone. I told him that if I couldn't get in with the tickets I'd be turning him in for robbing me. I got in just fine, but wouldn't have bought the tickets otherwise. Mostly I was nervous that because they were printed there could be multiples of the same tickets out there.

After getting a pistol stolen while moving from Denver back to Florida, by one of the movers I assume. If I ever get any work done on my house, I will ask for a manifest of all the crew with photocopies of their DLs and current addresses. Hopefully, just the act of doing this will be deterrent enough, but if they enlist the help of a third party it probably won't help much, but may down the road.

Call the contractor. You're also not 100% sure about it. Door could've been unlocked after the break-in. Point of entry could've been a window or something else.

I've checked every window and all the other locks....next door neighbor who doesn't have deadbolts on his doors were hit too only they used a screwdriver to pry the doors open....find it odd they needed a screwdriver for a house with no deadbolt but not on the one that did...

Detective came by Friday....called them back and still waiting to hear....will give them any info on contracting company and the specific guy who I'm convinced did this....

Changed the locks (now double cylinder dead bolts), got an ADT security system, purchased a gun for home protection (I had sold my last shotgun about 6 months ago) and ordered some "fake" security cameras with a red LED light and motion sensors to move when someone walks up.

Also set up a deer cam discreetly inside my front door (I have a half glass insert) to hopefully capture anyone walking up or that idiot coming back for more

I understand this all too well. Dairy (ice cream and/or milk) is my craving when I'm medicated for sleep.

When I take percocet for my migraines, and where I haven't eaten for a while because of the headache, the percocet wires me up a bit when the migraine is going away and I can eat a half gallon of local homemade (homemade ice cream actually has a lot more ice cream than the store bought half gallon size, which is no longer a half gallon and is smaller) ice cream in one sitting.

In house cameras are cheap and very common these days, and the feed usually gets saved to an external hard drive so that if they steal the cameras and internal hard drive, the video is saved.

And moving companies are just as bad as contractors. My wife's cousin had to move and the house that they bought, someone from the moving company stole some rings from the seller, and the seller refused to leave the house until the rings were found and her cousin couldn't move in the day that they hired to the movers, it was a complete mess. Why the seller took her rings off while the movers were there, is beyond me (I guess she took them off and another mover called her out of her room to answer some questions and another mover must have grabbed them off of her dresser).
