My son hit a 270' blast last Saturday

That is cool. Thanks for posting.

Was the women screaming in the background your wife? That brought back some memories at the youth baseball fields when my son used to play. I don't miss the long high pitched screaming when junior did something good from the baseball mom's.

No offense to your wife of course

Yeah, it was her and his Mimi. They got a little excited. Its a good thing the camera didn't pan on me because I did a series of fist pumps. :)

Cue the LR truthers who will tell you that HR was no more than 250'.

Actually, it wasn't me. I was on the field coaching. One of the players grandad films all of the kids at bats for that reason. Very cool that he does that.

Nice shot to the power alley. Looked like a no-doubter.

What age group? Do they always play on skinned infields with no mound.

Nice shot! But it looks like the real power is coming up to bat next. Good lord, that's a big kid.

12AA. Yeah, mainly skinned fields (softball)with portable mounds.

Damn that was a shot, congrats.

But 12AA pitching is like BP warm up

The team we were playing in this vid is AAA. They only lost one time in 12 games and that loss came to us(game in video). And I agree, some AA pitching isn't that good but the vast majority is. For instance, on our team we have AAA pitching but AA hitting. And on other teams, its just the opposite. Its kind of like golf....one day you drive well and cant put but other times its the right opposite. If our hitting ever comes around we are going to be hard to deal with.

His little brother probably would have. This one is really low key and humble, little brother is exact opposite.

Hitting a home run is the greatest feeling. Baseball, softball, kickball. Doesn't matter. Great feeling all around

My first year of coaching LL I had kid on the team with a JD Drew picture perfect swing He was incredible strong very physically mature for that age. We tape measured one of his at 399' to the tree it hit in. None of the other coaches in the league would let the pitchers pitch to him. After about 4 games of no official ABs due to being walked every plate appearance he moved up to pony league. As a 12 yr old he lead the league in HRs on 280' fields.. Just to tell you how stupid youth league BB rules can be, while he was able to play pony league as 12yo he was not allowed to compete as an all-star at 12. Because he had played as a pony league player he was not allowed play LL all-stars either.

As for the coaches not pitching to him, as much as I hated it, I could not fault them. Even as an 11 yo when he came to bat the entire infield move into the OF. I was so afraid he would hit a shot at kid and even in the OF the ball left his bat so fast no one could have got out of the way of the ball. I have never witnessed another player like him at any level before or after that.

So what ever happened to this kid? Peaked in little league?

Is #3 the catcher?
Nope, First Base/ pitcher, and can bring it. #12 is the primary catcher although we have 2 more. All of the kids can pitch, which is nice when we go deep into a tournament. My son pitches, 2B, 3B, SS and outfield.

Hardly so!! He was a star all the way through HS and some of his HR shots are legend around Chipley. He had a case of very bad knees and a few other injuries. He was a great young man and is now a great father and family man. He was one the few who played the game strictly for the love of the game and enjoyed it greatly. When it became less of a game and more of a chore it was no longer fun for him and he gave it up to concentrate on his degree.

Probably the kid I played against back in the 80's in Chipley. Every time we played them he would knock it out of the park over the RR tracks. This was at the old high school field by Memorial Stadium. Can't remember his name though-started with a K maybe Kolmenz?

No it wasn't Kolmentz, his last name was West. I have never seen a ball leave the bat the way it did his. One is his HS dingers is still legend around there today. It was a late afternoon game with an over cast sky, the lights were on but really did no good at that time of day. The ball left his bat so fast and got up so high everybody lost sight of it. You just knew it was out of the park but no one could pick it up against the gray sky. The ball came down about 200' beyond those RR tracks. The shot has gotten bigger as time as past but I was there and I can tell you it was impressive enough w/o being exaggerated. He was not a particular big guy in HS and while he was put together well he was not a muscled hunk either, but he has the most fluid swing I have seen even to this day. To me JD Drew had the best swing I have seen at FSU and better than most in the majors and I would say this kid's swing was even smoother than his.

I hit a lot of HRs in my day but it was B4 metal bats and souped up balls so mine was more of just a case of being bigger and stronger than most players and just mashing the ball. I hit some very impressive shots but these kids today with the specialize training and year round leagues it is really amazing how some these guys have developed great swings and really put some juice in the ball. Very pure swings and can adapt to off speed stuff better than we ever could when I played. This kid from Chipley had one of those swings way before it was the norm. I really like watching BB especially kids who have those fundamentally sound swings. College baseball is by far the most enjoyable game for me to watch.

What bats do they use at 12? I know at 13 they use BBCor and those are very close to wood.

BTW, the kid has some raw power but he is going to have to stop dropping his hands to succeed long run. Lots of high tee work will break that habit.

I remember those portable mounds. Things sucked hard to pitch off of. Congrats to your son.

Yep, we've already started working on that. He's a hard worker, he'll fix it.

A drill I have always liked to get a batter to stop dropping his hands is to have him take soft tosses with his back foot against the fence. If he drops his hands his bat will hit the fence, if he keep his hands up he will not hit the fence. Also helps them develop the proper weight shift through the swing..
