Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif made history as the first Seminole pairing to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship after defeating Arizona State’s Jacob Bullard and Murphy Cassone in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6) on Thursday afternoon. This marks the furthest any FSU competitor has ever advanced in the NCAA Individual Championships.

“It was an incredibly tough battle and very windy, but the rain delay helped us to clear our minds and execute with more aggression which has been successful for us,” Cornut-Chauvinc said.

The FSU pair played a very cool and collected first set, holding their serve throughout the frame and finding a crucial break point to win the set 6-4.

The Seminole duo dropped their first set of the competition in the following frame 6-2 to set up the deciding 10-point tiebreaker.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif were down 2-1 before a brief rain shower halted play for a short period of time. After the delay, the pair unleashed some powerful play and regained the lead at 3-2 before extending their advantage to three at 7-4.

The Florida State duo outlasted their opponent and took a 10-6 victory in the tiebreaker. Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif earned their ninth ranked victory of the season and became the first Seminoles to advance to the semifinals of any NCAA Championship.

“We didn’t play our best match but we connected well and found our momentum at the right time,” Dous-Karpenschif said.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif advance to the semifinals and will face No. 26 Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper of Texas on Friday afternoon.
