No. 5 national seed Florida State Men’s Golf endured a challenging round on a championship-level course at the Omni La Costa North Course in Carlsbad, Calif., on Friday. The result was an 11-over showing that puts the Seminoles tied for 17th following the opening round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships.
Jack Nicklaus Award finalist Luke Clanton anchored the Seminoles, tying for eighth with a 1-under round. The sophomore got off to a strong start with a birdie on four of his first six holes, then had a solid back nine with one birdie, one bogey and seven pars on a golf course that produced some lopsided results across all 30 teams.
Clanton is one of 12 golfers in the 156-player field who shot under par in the first round. His five birdies in the round is tied for the fourth most.
Graduate golfer Cole Anderson and senior Brett Roberts, both making their fourth NCAA Championships appearances, finished with a pair of 3-over 75s and sit tied for 63rd. Of the five Seminoles competing, Anderson was the only golfer to shoot better on the back nine, carding a 36 on his final nine holes.
Senior Gray Albright, making his first NCAA appearance, is tied for 112th at 6-over. Frederik Kjettrup is tied for 148th at 12-over.
The Seminoles had a respectable showing in par 4 scoring Friday, shooting 9-over to tie for the fifth-best among the 30-team field.
Anderson returns on Tuesday to start FSU’s tee times at hole 10, teeing off at 10:02 a.m. ET/7:02 PT. Roberts follows at 10:13 a.m. ET, followed by Albright (10:24 a.m.), Kjettrup (10:35 a.m.) and Clanton (10:46 a.m.).
