Sportico obtained the requests for a spring football game from both Colorado and Syracuse that was ultimately denied as the NCAA thought it constituted an unfair recrutiting advantage to the two schools.
According to Sportico's reporting their proposals submitted by the two schools leaned heavily into what the considered would be safety concerns. Sportico wrote: "In near-identical letters attached to the waiver request, Colorado’s head athletic trainer Anthony Pass and team physician Sourav Poddar, along with Syracuse’s head football trainer Drew Willson and senior associate athletic director Jon Mitchell, argued that the primary motivation was “the significant medical benefits” a joint-scrimmage would provide. Their letters cited two studies from the Journal of Athletic Training—a 2007 study analyzing injury epidemiology across 15 college sports and a 2022 study examining the concussion rates in spring football."
While the NCAA denied their waiver for this year, they left the opportunity open to re-apply for coming years.
Would the NCAA be less inclined to deny these requests if every school was given the opportunityand time to schedule a spring game?
