Currently have a Honda Accord EX-L and my first idea was to simply get another Accord. They're reliable and Hondas have been good cars for my wife and me but wondered what else in the sedan category that people like or have had issues with.

I loved my wife’s 2016 Hyundai Sonata well enough that when I replaced my car a couple of months ago I did it with a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited Edition.

US News agrees with me btw. You can read their head to head comparison on the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata and they chose the Sonata as the winner.

https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/head-to-head-hyundai-sonata-vs-honda-accord

The main selling points for the Sonata for me is that for their class (deemed a full size car by rental companies) they have really good gas mileage comparable to a lot of smaller cars, their safety and reliability record are top notch and in the Limited Edition, their interior is on par or better than more expensive prestige cars.

Before getting the Sonata Hybrid Limited Edition, we took a test drive of the Lexus ES Hybrid and honestly not only did I like the Sonata better because it was $15k cheaper but I liked it straight up better regardless of price. I also testdrove the Prius, the Accord, the Altima and a couple of others and I straight up liked the Sonata Hybrid Limited Edition better than their counterparts.

Tex, do you have any price limits? You can't really beat an Accord.

I get to drive rental cars each week; usually mid size cars. I get to choose, so I drive different things. Of everything in the Accord range, I'd stay with an Accord. Nissan Altimas are OK, but they have a variable speed transmission that's very different. I drove an Audi S5 last week that was pretty nice. I drive various Chevy's from time-to-time, but wouldn't buy one. Same with Volvo.

You been bragging to Dan about all your exciting action?
I like to party.

I just couldn't imagine having different versions of the same personality-less car decade after decade.

Treat yo' self!!

Get something like a Lexus GS hybrid that will still be reliable and get good gas mileage, and will be a little nicer and more fun to drive. Get one a year or two old and spend half of what a new one costs.

Tesla Model S. Starts at $36K, range of 220 miles on a charge. Incredibly comfortable and quiet - practically drives itself. As the kids say these days, driving it is so choice.

Trying to keep it between $18-$22K and certified pre owned. We had good luck finding my wife a Certified same year Pilot that had 9,000 miles on it. I like the Accord but Acura TLX is also on my radar

We love our Audi SQ5. My wife drove Toyota Highlanders and 4 Runners for years including a couple of hybrids. The Audi is a lot more fun!

I like the Q5 a lot. Do you think there's an appreciable difference between the Q5 and the SQ5? I wonder since it's an SUV if it performs/handles/accelerates any better - at least that you can tell through normal SUV driving.

We got the wife a 2016 Sonata as well. Impressive vehicle for the price.

I like that you threw in that you had the EX-L, you big baller you!

Seriously, stick with the Honda/Acura family. Those things won't do you wrong.
There are enough models to keep you from feeling like it's just the same car all over again.

Hat tip to the Sonata, those are fun to drive for a family sedan. V6 has some pep.

German cars are fun but $$ on repairs, resale doesn't hold up as well.

An EX-L isn't the baller model in Honda's. That honor goes to the "Touring" line :)

I have a hard time looking away from Honda/Acura because of the reliability.

Not the flashiest car but definitely something to be said for not worrying about a car other than routine maintenance. Good gas mileage too.

There is a big performance difference since the SQ5 is supercharged 350hp vs. 220hp.

Ahh, okay. I didn't recognize that there was a 2.0 engine. I guess if I were going to get one, it would be the 3.0 engine, so the comparison is ~270 to 350hp. That's still a pretty big difference though. I've currently got an RX350, which is at 275, so comparable to the 3.0 engine. Thanks for that - I didn't know it made that big of difference - my comparison is Lexus, which has the "F Sport", which seems like it upgrades a bunch of cosmetic stuff, but (I think) keeps the same engine.

2016 and 2017 Accords have a 3 out of 5 predicted reliability per USNews.

2016 and 2017 Sonatas have a 4 out of 5.

I’d suggest you test drive a limited version of the Sonata and compare it to the more expensive Audis, Lexuses and whatnot. I did and despite the price preferred it.

My ex looked at Accords and Accuras. She ended up getting a better deal on the Acura, and has been really happy with the choice.

In your price range, a Lexus IS would be a choice. Maintenance can be extremely expensive though. I have a co-worker with an IS, she puts 35,000 miles on it per year, and she had to replace a headlight after just two years. You have to take the front clip (bumper) off to replace a headlight. This was with the new LED headlights.

I've seen different versions of this, which breaks down estimated maintenance cost over 10 years. Of course, your mileage may vary....

You should look at Carvana. We bought an Acura there earlier this year and are very happy with the purchase. They have a location in Jax now.

My wife has owned two Subaru Legacies, and had no complaints whatsoever. We bought a boat earlier this year so I bought a Tundra. We traded her 2015 Legacy (limited, or whatever the top of line version is called) in on the Tundra and she kept the 2014 Highlander that I was driving. My mother-in-law drives a Legacy as well. Super reliable, and is AWD, which is a must have here in Pittsburgh.

I've seen online ads for Carvana and I saw their facility off 95. I'll definitely check them out.

The cars are very low mileage (ours is a 2013 and had 32K miles on it when we bought it) and in excellent condition, which I presume is because they are off lease. You can search their inventory online and they'll ship it to your location within 2-3 days. They'll give you time to test drive and I think there is a 7 day no questions asked return policy.

All of the staff is in their 20s and really nice. It felt more like buying a car from Google than a dealer.

My local ride is a 2000 Avalon with a home paint job. You can get half a dozen of them for the price of a new car.
