I hate instant replay in baseball , I think the beauty of baseball encompasses the bang bang play , and a pitcher who gets eats up the edge, but that tooth paste is out of the tube , so I guess Bergman was out...

other than when Smoltz went to bullpen and came back, has anyone ever come back better after being labeled "done" than Verlander?

That play represents why I love baseball

The skip pass to first, great play

Life long Astro's fan. Flew to the WS in Houston last year from Charlotte. All I can say is gooooooo Stros!!!!!

Dodgers get retribution if Houston and LA make it to the WS. Too many bats in the Dodgers lineup and bench.

I don't understand Counsell using Hader in the 8th and Jeffress in the 9th. Jeffress has struggled this entire postseason and gave up 2 hits last night before getting the final out.

Will be at Game 5 on Thursday night and finally get to see Verlander pitch. Went to 10 games this year and the schedule never timed up right until then. Go Astros!

You seem like a nice guy, but I sincerely hope you see him lose. :D

The Dodgers and Manny Machado are just dirty. I wonder if the league will step in and say anything before today's game. Go Brewers!

Machado called out as 'dirty' after eventful G4

In the 10th, Machado dragged his left leg into Brewers first baseman Jesus Aguilar's back leg as he crossed first base. The contact angered Aguilar, leading to a heated exchange and clearing both benches and bullpens.

"It's a dirty play by a dirty player," Brewers right fielder Christian Yelich said.

"It looked like it," Aguilar said. "I've known Manny for many years and I don't know why he would act like that."

To say the way Counsell manages his pitching staff is unconventional would be a massive understatement. Yanking your starter after giving up a walk to the first batter of the game???

He's been unconventional for a while now. My question is the same as the announcers are discussing: Is it unethical/Should what he's doing be addressed by the MLB Commissioner's office?

My own take is that it's pretty cool...If your bullpen is better than your somewhat injury-depleted starting pitching, then play to your strength.

You pull your pitcher for a righty to intentionally mess up my lineup, the gloves come off. Your pitcher gets high ear and then one in the ribs.

That's fair perhaps. I just don't think that MLB should get involved.

I know baseball has more unwritten rules than all the other sports combined but he didn't break a written rule so I don't know how the commissioner's office can do anything. I agree with Fiji. Let the players handle it on the field.

Interesting. What did Smoltz say about it? He’s tremendous in the booth.

Why would it be unethical?

I don't get. Are you saying that by putting in a pitcher that favors the remaining lineup is busch league?
I played baseball all the way through high school and have never heard that being against the unwritten rules. If you have the middle staff that can carry a team over weak starters, then by all means, trot them out on a carousel.

As an Astros fan, Ive always been lucky we've had long inning aces - Mike Scott, Nolan Ryan, Oswalt, Hampton, Randy Johnson, Schilling, Clemens, Verlander with a stud closer, but if a team has mid relief arms and use them, I say, why not? The Brewers are going to have to get creative to win it all with the teams left in this.

It's somewhat like the strategy the Rays used most of this season, using an "opener" (as opposed to a true starter) whose job was to get through an inning or two. They had little choice; due to injuries they only had a couple of health starters who were worth a crap.
I think it's something you'll see more teams do in the future, and it does make sense. There are a lot more guys around who are capable of getting a few outs than there are who can give you 5 or 6 quality innings.

But this isn’t an opener. It was just deception and pretty Bush league. The Rays were starting relievers with the expectation they would go 1-2 innings. Counsell started a starter and then pulled him after one batter to screw up the other teams batting order. It’s obviously not illegal it’s just kinda cheap and amateur hour.

He pulled his starting lefty, that the Dodgers set their lineup to, for a righty. Each team knows the next day starter so you can adjust your lineup for the righty v lefty matchup.

Nice base hit there to get tying run in
I hope Stros win , just to see this one go 6 or 7
