Sunday night update

The soap opera with Warren Thompson continues. Based on his tweet this evening he is working to make amends with Mike Norvell and the staff. This a big step on his part to potentially move past his tweet from the other day. Not sure if this means he's back on the team, but it's definitely looking more possible.

--------

We've been able to gather a little additional information from Saturday night's scrimmage in Doak Campbell Stadium.

Bonus nuggets:

* Sounding like there's a good chance that neither D.J. Matthews nor Warren Thompson will be a part of the team this fall. Both are reportedly candidates to "opt-out" under the COVID-19 exception. There's a very slight chance that one or both could work things out with the coaches but the odds are against it.

* We received confirmation that FSU will definitely add an 11th game to the schedule following the cancellation of the Samford game. Not sure if it's legit, but the only speculation I've heard for a possible school is USF. The only thing that seems likely is that it won't be a big name opponent and it will probably be school located in the southeast.

-------------

* As was hinted at by Mike Norvell and Kennly Dillingham in post-scrimmage interviews, the defensive line had its way with the offensive line. This is completely understandable considering FSU's DL may be the best in the country, while the OL is still mixing and matching personnel with a new position coach. Even so, the feeling is that the OL is improved compared to last year (nowhere to go but up). And there's plenty of confidence in that Alex Atkins will get the most out of his group. And there should be the building blocks to to field a competent line. But it's definitely a work in progress.

* Defensive end Joshua Kaindoh was reportedly "wreaking havoc" on the offense. Despite different personnel groupings on the OL, he could not be consistently blocked. Ira will have a feature on Kaindoh coming later today.

* We were told that quarterback James Blackman was much more in control compared to last season and did a solid job handling the pressure (there was plenty) while keeping his composure. The biggest takeaway is that he didn't hesitate to throw the ball away when necessary instead of making an ill-advised throw. While the other three QBs are showing a lot of promise, he's ahead of the pack at the moment.

* Transfer Jashaun Corbin is separating himself from the rest of the running backs. He was the most consistent back in all phases and should start the season at the top of the depth chart. Freshmen Corey Wren, Lawrance Toafili and Ja’Khi Douglas are all showing flashes but aren't to Corbin's level yet.

* We received further confirmation that Travis Jay, who is lining up at free safety, was all over the place making plays.

* The linebackers did a solid job being in position and making tackles. The point was made that the defense will be better than expected this season.

* Not surprising, but we heard that WRs D.J. Matthews and Warren Thompson did not take part in the scrimmage.

We are working on gathering more info. so there might be a bonus nugget or two later.
